One year ago, I met Simone and we started our company together. I was in talks with someone else when Simone reached out to me. By that time, I already had low expectations about finding a co-founder through the YC matching platform. However, Simone had an amazing experience and a unique combination of tech (ML Engineer at META) and finance (strategist at Goldman Sachs) backgrounds, so I responded immediately. In April 2023, during a meeting with another potential co-founder, we offered Simone a role as a founding member because we wanted to add someone with a business background at the time. She expressed her desire to be a founder, not just a founding member. We asked her to think and agreed to meet again the following week. A week later, she reiterated her desire to be a co-founder. While another potential co-founder was disappointed by this, I thought, "Oh, she has character!" We finished the meeting without clear next steps, but that was the moment she impressed me. Meanwhile, I was experiencing issues with another potential co-founder who was hesitant to commit. That was causing delays. I wasn't happy with the situation, and we decided not to move forward. The first thing I did was call Simone. I had so many meetings with people telling me that they want to be founders, but in reality few of them were able to take risks and responsibilities that come with this role. To cut such people quickly I found a good test - ask for commitments, and specifically, to put money into the company. It saved me a lot of time. I applied the same test to Simone. Without hesitation, she invested a small amount as an angel investor. In May 2023, we signed a short agreement to undertake a trial project for a couple of months, which turned out to be a success. Six months later, in September 2023, Simone and I left our jobs at Google and Meta to work together full-time. It's been a wonderful experience. There's a huge difference between going solo or with someone I need to convince, versus having a partner who is equally committed and supportive. Simone probably still does not realize that but she is a great role model for many girls and women today: humble, intelligent and hardworking risk-taker. She started her own company just a few months after delivering her second child and walked away from a great salary in a top tech company where she was well-respected and in high demand. She is really strong and she deserves a lot of respect for her actions. It's incredibly fun to work with people who can take risks and have character! Thank you, Simone, for being such a great partner!
Thank you Alex for the nice words. I enjoyed working with you too! It's been a wonderful year and I've learned a lot from you! I'm excited for all the years ahead!
That's the exact attitude you need in a cofounder. Someone confident in what they want, and willing to put in the effort to make it happen.
