Attending #BETTAsia2024 was an eye-opening experience for me, especially as someone who recently transitioned from being a lecturer to working in ed-tech. The conversations around AI were exciting—teachers are using AI to personalize learning, streamline grading, and create more engaging content. There’s so much potential for AI to change education, and yet, walking through the event, I couldn’t help but feel a tug at my heart. I miss the classroom. 😶 Teaching, for me, was never JUST about delivering content or meeting curriculum goals. It was about the connection—those moments when a student’s eyes light up, when a challenging concept finally clicks, or even when a student confides in you because they trust you. There, I sensed a real concern among teachers. Many are embracing AI with open arms, but others are worried. They’re asking the same questions I’ve asked myself: “Will AI take away the personal connection in teaching?” In my role now, I see the amazing ways AI can support teachers—by taking care of tedious tasks like grading, so teachers can focus on what they do best: connecting with students. But here’s the truth: AI can’t replace the warmth, empathy, and intuition that only a teacher can provide. It can’t give that reassuring nod during a difficult lesson or share in the joy of a student’s breakthrough. What struck me most at BETT was that despite the fears and uncertainties, there’s an opportunity here. As educators, we’re at the intersection of innovation and humanity. AI can help us reach more students, personalize their learning experiences, and open up possibilities we never imagined. But at the core, the human connection—our connection—will always be the heart of teaching. So, to my fellow educators, especially those feeling apprehensive about this new wave of technology: embrace it, but never lose sight of what makes us irreplaceable. Our compassion, our presence, and our ability to inspire are what truly shape the future of our students. As I think about my kids’ education, it's striking to see them studying a curriculum that's remarkably similar to what I experienced over 30 years ago. This raises a pressing question for all of us as parents: What does the future of education hold? In a world increasingly dominated by machines and automation, we must prioritize equipping our children with the skills and mindset that will keep them relevant. Thank God I completed the Aice course This course allowed me to learn in depth about artificial intelligence and how it works. It also allowed me to learn about and deal with many artificial intelligence tools and how to train an artificial intelligence model In this course, I also met a group of friends from many beautiful parts of the world, especially from Africa It was great As a dedicated participant in the AICE ALX program, I have honed my skills in cutting-edge technology and innovative problem-solving. Reflecting on the CES 2024 conference, I'm reminded that learning doesn’t end when the sessions do. Here are a few post-conference reflections: 🔄 The Confluence of Values: Our work intertwines our values (as well as our identities, experiences, biases, etc.) with those of our clients, communities, professional bodies, and other groups/systems. It's a dynamic, ever-changing space that requires humility and frequent reflection. 🤖 Generative AI in Evaluation: I really enjoyed these discussions. While we have experts in other tech tools (mobile data collection, analysis software, etc.), generative AI remains a new frontier. We are collectively in the stage of exploration and experimentation, weighing possibilities and risks. 🏆 Student Case Competition: Always a highlight! This year's competition showcased incredible new talent in our field. Congrats to all of the participants, who absolutely crushed it. 🙌 Renewed Motivation: So much learning to apply and areas to follow up on (Footprint Evaluation, EARTH goals, Realist Evaluation - the list goes on). I'm grateful for the lift in motivation that comes from this conference and connecting with friends and colleagues! #EvalC2024
