Does use of Gen AI improve creativity? This recent real-world experiment by Kian Gohar and Jeremy Utley showed that teams engaged in a creative problem-solving task saw only modest gains from AI assistance for the most part—and some underperformed. Surveys conducted before and after the exercise showed that the teams using AI gained far more confidence in their problem-solving abilities than the others did, but that much of their confidence was misplaced. However, this is classical example of the old adage a poor craftsman blames his tools. Kian says “Brainstorming with generative AI requires rethinking your ideation workflow and learning new skills," The article offers guidance for approaching the exercise as a structured, ongoing conversation, opening up a staggering capacity to develop better and more-creative ideas faster.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a powerful tool for creative problem-solving. A recent study found that teams using generative AI to brainstorm ideas generated more ideas overall. However, the quality of the ideas did not necessarily improve and may have even suffered in some cases. To maximize the benefits of generative AI in brainstorming, researchers recommend several key steps. First, teams should carefully define the problem they are trying to solve. The more specific the problem statement, the better the AI will be able to assist. Second, teams should brainstorm individually before introducing the AI. This helps to ensure a diversity of ideas and prevents the team from being overly influenced by the AI's suggestions.
