How did I go from reviewing 2000 ads per hour at Facebook to starting a Stanford University Graduate School of Business MBA in 2 years? In 2011, I received an offer to join Facebook India. I was 3 years out of college in a corporate role that paid 50% more. Taking a job reviewing ads at Facebook seemed like moving backwards. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫. Three factors shaped my decision in the moment. 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 When I joined, Facebook India was only a few months old. Facebook valued growing impact with a lean team. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞. 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 Kirthiga Reddy, the Head of Facebook India at the time, personally interviewed the first 100 employees. Within minutes of talking to her, I saw that reviewing ads wasn’t a dead-end task—it was a stepping stone. Kirthiga's vision? Bring in smart people to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and evolve the business. That vision convinced me that bigger and better things were ahead if I proved myself. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭-𝐭𝐨-𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 A lot of us focus on the next goal but the next-to-next goal needs to be our guiding light. 𝐈 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤. Business schools care about community, college, and career. I had good grades and community service but because my undergrad institution wasn't an IIT, I needed a career "brand" to make my resume stand out. If I could grow at Facebook, I'd meet this goal. Within 3 months of reviewing ads, I moved to a team working on advertiser reports. In less than a year, at 23,  𝐈 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞-𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. My salary saw significant increases multiple times, and the career trajectories of my peers from that era are equally, if not more, remarkable—a testament to Kirthiga’s leadership. Taking calculated risks can redefine your career in ways you never expect. My time at Facebook changed my career trajectory, not just in terms of title or salary, but by helping me 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐬. 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰. Looking back, this mindset shift was just as valuable as any promotion. What bold move or pivotal decision has shaped your career? I'd love to hear your story. Akshita Joshi Khoury thank you for sharing! My boldest move was moving to China when I was 22 years old with no real Mandarin skills, no cultural context, and no clear immediate sense of where it would go. I made that decision when I visited China for 1 month in high school. What I was certain about was that I had the commitment to see my decision through and that's where I notice we can go wrong with risky decisions, a lack of commitment in the face of failure or hardship. Ultimately, other people will always have opinions, but you need to trust yourself and your reasoning while taking risks.

Thank you for sharing your story 🌸 I love the part about looking at opportunities from the perspective of potential vs right now - I was sharing the very same with my son who’s half way through his bachelors just few nights ago🤩 My story has also been about just following the dots and then later seeing that they were actually creating a picture of the path I was meant to be on🪷
