Just once, I wish a company would actually give more information than just "After careful consideration, we have decided to move forward with other candidates for the Senior Backend Engineer, Subscriber Data Platform position" or similar, because I *really* don't understand what companies are looking for at this point. For example, I know that 2 isn't a very large sample size (even if I've applied to 20-some jobs since getting that AWS certification, and just haven't heard back from most), but it still feels annoying that even after putting in the time, money, and effort to make my résumé stand out more, I'm still getting rejected. Does anyone have advice on what I can do to actually start making it to phone screens again? Because this is just getting silly, how hard it is to even make it to that point. Or, of course, I'll always take referrals or introductions, so I have a way of getting my foot in the door. Recently my friend went through an interview process for a Software Engineer position that left me puzzled. The interview process consisted of two stages. The first stage was technical, focused on Java, and was supposed to be followed by a second round, including a cultural fit interview. They asked questions about Java Core, Spring, Spring Boot, AWS, Kafka, and Microservices and answered to the whole questions. He had a call with a recruiter from an agency after the interview process. The recruiter was polite and professional, but the company itself seemed strange. They gave unusual feedback, stating that he hadn't turned on my camera. However, if the interviewer didn't turn on their camera, what did he suppose to do? This experience has taught the importance of need for companies to provide meaningful feedback. #jobsearch #interviewexperience #softwareengineering

The #1 thing I wish students emailing me about jobs would do is to visit the Career Center and learn how how to pitch their story. Anyone who spent even five minutes on my website would notice is that I'm probably not hiring for a Java/C++/AWS/Postgres/etc. engineer. But: - you took and aced a class in my research area? - you have experience with talking with and listening to humans, eg through a hobby or part-time job outside tech? - you have an affinity for design? - you spotted something I'm working on that you have an idea for? - you know how to connect those dots for me in the first sentence of your email (the one that shows up in my email preview pane)? MUCH more likely to snag a reply from me, and even a Zoom interview request!

Here's how to hit it: Job listings typically specify: 1️⃣ Required qualifications 2️⃣ Preferred qualifications The successful candidate will likely have: 1️⃣ MOST of the required qualifications 2️⃣ SOME preferred qualifications To maximize your chances: 💡 Apply even if you don't meet 1-2 required qualifications. For example, the listing may require 5 years of management experience and you have 3. Your competitors may not check all the boxes either! ❌ Don't waste time applying if you have less than 2/3 of required qualifications or lack an absolutely key skill.
