Yesterday I spent the day learning #Symfony. I already knew a lot about it, I am versatile enough on the web to touch any framework blindly. But when I saw how Symfony has a template system called twig, and how much it looks like my own template class (but with more features), I just had to jump in. It was an adventure, as I created an Ubuntu virtual machine and went through the great tutorials that Symfony provides. I felt right at home with it. Zero HTML in PHP files, every resource in their own place. Fast development. Just the way I like to work. Just the way I do it with my own code. It is great. Also it was a good opportunity to brush the rust of my Linux skills. For smaller applications I will still use my own template system (you cannot go smaller than a class). But Symfony is powerful and has solutions that my code will never achieve as fast.

I wanted to build a text processor app for Ubuntu since Power Ge'ez doesn't work on Linux, and I often use an online Amharic keyboard to type. It annoys me. At first, I thought about building the app in Python using Tkinter since I’ve worked with it before, then mighty java came in to my mind but JavaFX was out of the question—I still remember the struggle with my class project a year ago! 😭 , and on coarse i have personal beef .Net, C# is for losers. Then I thought, why not try JavaScript? I’ve always been curious about Electron.js. With zero knowledge, just some documentation and a few hints from ChatGPT, I jumped into it. The setup took me 30 minutes, and I configured it to use a React runtime with a web stack for building the app. Surprisingly, after that, it was pretty straightforward. I was writing React code, testing it on a web server, and then building it into an app. Honestly, I might start building games in Electron from now on. When i say game, i meant snake and ping pong, not the 3d video games🙂 . Right now, I'm designing the buttons, and if it doesn't bore me, I’ll keep building the software. If anyone’s curious, here’s the GitHub repo: https://lnkd.in/eSNy5NBk. It may or may not work—no guarantees, not my problem, but hey, it works on my machine!
