Speaking from my experience using different tools, I am quite picky about the value of any tool's features. It's probably my tech education and experience talk in me but I compare and check different tools if and how they suit my needs.
So, short trials are usually not so good for me as I might just not have enough time to make a decision.
No free trials or free plans just make me (in most cases) look further if only I don't see that value right away.
There are so many different SaaS, mSaaS, and other aaS around it just makes it crazy to leave payment details on a bunch of sites before getting is it really what you are looking for?
Truly I don't know what the solution is, but all the new founders pushed by create your micro SaaS hype shall think about the model.
Btw, what I found helpful from the ability to purchase credits on the platform.
So it's not a big deal to pay a bit and continue testing before subscription.
May be this is a solution?
I’ve been seeing many new founders ditching free plans lately.
Personally I think that freemium is great. The problem with it is that you need to create enough discomfort for users to push them to buy without making it so uncomfortable that they stop using the product altogether.
That balance is incredibly hard to find.
Most founders give it just one try, see that people either don’t convert or churn and conclude that freemium must go.
I don’t think it can work only for funded startups but it definitely requires a good amount of trial and error.
