Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) are facing growing pressures from stakeholders to address global challenges and to alleviate inequalities faced by disadvantaged communities in the regions where they operate. This thematic literature review chapter in the AIB UKI 2024 Book by Renan Oliveira, Ph.D, Jayne Cathcart, Prof Axele Giroud, Prof Jorge Carneiro and Prof Pervez N. Ghauri seeks to uncover existing knowledge in the IB, wider management literature and closely related fields—economics and development studies—to understand how MNEs interact with disadvantaged communities in emerging markets. Since several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are concerned with addressing the needs of disadvantaged communities, this study explores the potential for MNEs to contribute to the achievement of the #SDGs, and in particular #SDG8 (Decent work and economic development). SDGs are designed to be universal, applicable to all countries regardless of their level of development, and they are intended to guide global efforts towards a more sustainable and equitable future. Voluntary National Reviews play a pivotal role in facilitating the exchange of experiences, including successes, challenges, and lessons learned, to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. I'm thrilled to have participated in the SDGs-AMP 2024 Workshop Series 2, facilitated by Keagetswe Alex Kgotlaetsile, Education Lead at WGYD, AU. The workshop provided an in-depth overview of the African Union, including a comprehensive understanding of AU Agenda 2063 – the blueprint and masterplan for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse through its 7 Aspirations. We delved into the First Ten Year Implementation Plan (2014-2023), known as the decade of convergence, which united member countries around a common agenda, leading to significant achievements in infrastructure, economic integration, and the strengthening of RECs and continental frameworks. Looking ahead, the Second Ten Year Implementation Plan (2024-2033) – the decade of acceleration – emphasizes stronger collaboration between the AU and the UN. It focuses on leveraging resources and implementation arrangements to fast-track the realization of Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030. Inspired by the 7 aspirations, STYIP introduces 7 moonshots to be achieved through integration, flagship projects, and various enablers. A highlight of the workshop was understanding the crucial role of youth in implementing STYIP, given that over 70% of Africa's population is young. Thank you, AIIDEV Africa, for this enlightening experience. I look forward to more insightful workshop series! #SDGs #Africa #AUAgenda2063 #SustainableDevelopment #YouthEmpowerment #Mentorship

The United Nations General Assembly designated June 27 as "Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day" to raise awareness of MSMEs' vital contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). MSMEs have the potential to transform economies, create jobs, and promote equitable growth with adequate support. MSME Day highlights their crucial role and explores opportunities for further advancement. MSMEs constitute 90% of businesses, 60-70% of employment, and 50% of GDP globally. As society's backbone, they contribute to local and national economies and sustain livelihoods, particularly for the working poor, women, youth, and vulnerable groups. In emerging markets, SMEs generate most formal jobs, creating 7 out of 10 positions, making SME development a top priority for many governments worldwide. 🌐 On this United Nations International Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day, we recognise the critical role that these businesses play in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s theme, "Leveraging Power and Resilience of MSMEs to Accelerate Sustainable Development and Eradicate Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises," emphasises the necessity of fostering collaboration among policymakers, large corporations, financial institutions, and the global community. To commemorate the occasion, the editors at Global Focus magazine have curated a selection of insightful features that underscore the importance of collaboration and responsible leadership in achieving sustainable development, including: 🍃 Rumina Dhalla and 𝗝𝗖 (Jean-christophe) CARTERON Carteron argue that the failure to integrate SDG content in business schools is due to a competitive mindset rather than the collaborative approach essential for responsible leadership. 🍃 David Grayson explains the dramatic growth of the quantity and quality of business collaboration linked to sustainable development. 🍃 Raymond Saner and Yiu Lichia assert that despite challenges, initiatives like the SDGs, responsible business conduct, and business diplomacy can foster shared prosperity. 🍃 Philippe De Woot says that we need to transform our creativity into real progress for humankind and shows how social innovation can open the door for new methods and practices. By supporting MSMEs, we can enhance their resilience and unlock their potential to drive transformative change, helping to achieve the SDGs and create a more inclusive and sustainable future. Recapping our sharing yesterday at Rotary Club Kisasi Kyanja #Uganda Building Trust is the unsung Hero in Empowering Global Institutions As we grapple with the complexities of contemporary global challenges, it's easy to focus on policy and budgets as the primary drivers of change. However, there's a crucial element that often gets overlooked, #Trust. Trust is the glue that holds institutions together, enables effective collaboration, and fosters a sense of shared purpose. Without it, even the most well-crafted policies and robust budgets can fall flat. Here are three reasons why building trust is key in empowering our global institutions: 1. Trust enables individuals and organizations to work together towards a common goal. When stakeholders trust each other, they're more likely to share knowledge, resources, and expertise, leading to more effective solutions. 2. Trust creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable taking risks, experimenting with new ideas, and innovating. This leads to creative solutions and adaptability in the face of rapidly evolving challenges. 3. Trust ensures that institutions are transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of their constituents. When trust is present, institutions are more likely to be held accountable for their actions, leading to better governance and decision-making. So, how can we build trust in our global institutions? Here are a few strategies: - Institutions should prioritize transparency in their decision-making processes, operations, and finances. - Institutions should establish clear mechanisms for accountability, such as independent oversight bodies and whistleblower protection. - Institutions should involve diverse stakeholders in decision-making processes, ensuring that a wide range of perspectives are represented. Trust building today is a core in empowering our global institutions to mitigate contemporary global challenges. By prioritizing trust, we can create a foundation for effective collaboration, risk-taking, and accountability, ultimately leading to a more equitable, sustainable, and just world. In the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, levers refer to strategic actions or mechanisms that can be used to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs. When these key strategic actions are applied, larger outputs can be realized from small inputs. These levers have a significant impact on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The key levers are: 1. Governance 2. Economy and Finance 3. Individual and Collective Action 4. Science and Technology 5. Capacity Building If key stakeholders, such as governments, private companies, CSOs/NGOs, religious organizations, schools and universities, and youth, leverage these key strategies, more progress will be made towards achieving the SDGs. #AIIDEVAfrica #EmmanuelOla-Olawayo #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs
