Emma Greenland presented her first CPD of the year to the team at Innes Associates Architecture & Urban Design this week. This Lunch and Learn session delivered via TEAMS showcased our work and research on 'Improving access to listening in mainstream schools' We provide practical guidance on how schools and architects can meet their duties to anticipate the needs of children with special hearing or communication needs (shcn) in accordance with key regulations and standards using a 'reasonable' adjustments approach. It was really useful to discuss Innes' recent experience on Post Occupancy Evaluation visits with Natalia Klus, Simon Innes and Corrie-Anne Rounding, share some common watch areas for acoustics which don't fall into the normal scope of compliance, and explore ideas for efficient acoustic finishes to meet inclusive standards. We have documented the construction of a wide range of education facilities, from primary schools to universities. Our systems capture the entire building process, recording the development of spaces where future generations will learn and grow. Each project, whether a primary school, middle school, high school, college, or university, is recorded in detail, showing the building's progress until it is a completed educational institution. The footage serves as a visual record of the work that goes into creating environments for education, highlighting the construction milestones that shape these vital community assets. One Year Down, Infinite Horizons Ahead at UMass Amherst! It's hard to believe that two semesters have gone by since I embarked on the incredible journey of the dual M.Arch./M.RP. program at UMass Amherst. These past few months have been a whirlwind of exploration and discovery, pushing me to new heights in both design and planning. 1. Timber Triumphs & Tech Explorations: ️ 🏗 From delving into the world of mass timber construction to staying at the forefront of cutting-edge design technologies used right here in the US, the program has exposed me to a treasure trove of knowledge that's already transforming my approach to architecture. 2. Studio Spotlight: "Where Models Meet Masterminds.." 🏚 The architecture studios have been a crucible of creativity. I've honed my model-making skills to a fine art, collaborated with inspiring minds in interactive design sessions, and learned to translate ideas into tangible realities. 3. The MRP Advantage: "A Blessing in Disguise" 🙏 While the M.Arch. focuses on the intricate world of design, the MRP program has become an unexpected blessing. The integration of these two disciplines has opened my eyes to the bigger picture, allowing me to see how design and planning can work together to create truly impactful spaces. This dual degree is more than just a qualification; it's a passport to a future where I can shape not just buildings, but entire communities. Paul Vick is lecturing on the above topic at The Gresham Society in the City of London with examples from the practice’s work on Th 23rd May 1500-1545 online. How badly is it all going in terms of climate change and development solutions? Nearly 40 years ago, the Brundtland report identified political and economic issues (rather than technological ones) as the greatest challenges affecting climate change - so has anything improved since then? The answer might lie further back in time when de Tocqueville in the early C19th maintained that power may be more distributed than we think. We have agency, individually and together, to affect change.  In today’s world there are already design solutions and approaches that we can use to tackle climate change, and this is both empowering, and a form of power and profitability. Founder of Paul Vick architects, Paul Vick, tackles some shibboleths in a talk that looks at whether we are asking the right questions about profitability and value. They discuss some of the approaches they use to understand value and if they really are mutually exclusive; and how good design thinking can create value from the knowledge we have, and the knowledge we continue to gain. One such question the architect focussed on was ‘what is the value of creating a building that helps you live longer (for you, your users, clients)’ And ‘How do you create and innovate in a world which is often complex, uncertain, unaccounted and unaccountable?’ Where ‘art’ is the changing of perceptions and ‘design’ problem solving, good architecture addresses both.
