🌟 Exciting times at the #SMSConference in beautiful #Istanbul! 🇹🇷 It was a pleasure to have my co-author Danilo Pesce present our paper, co-written with Paolo Neirotti, titled "Business Model Adaptation in Response to Technological Change: A multilevel adaptation framework on incumbents’ response to digital transformation”. In this study, we propose a framework to examine how incumbents adapt their business models in response to technological discontinuities that disrupt core knowledge and complementary assets. Through an analysis of 24 Italian public museums, we explore different adaptation strategies and their impact on value creation, especially when there is a high degree of complementarity between existing knowledge and new technologies. I had the great honour today to open the International Forum of UNESCO Chairs and their partners on Transforming knowledge for #Africa’s future. This Forum is the culmination of years of reflection by the African Union, UNESCO, the UN system, and other partners on Africa’s future and its intellectual contribution to our shared future. To shape new possible futures for Africa and humanity, we must transform how we define, produce, and use knowledge. So, the main question is: How can we transform knowledge? I think he question can be addressed from three perspectives: Epistemological perspective: UNESCO views knowledge, including languages and cultures, as part of humanity’s intangible heritage, advocating for the use of technological innovation to protect and enhance this shared resource while overcoming historical exclusions and preserving diversity. Cultural and historic perspective: Africa has been a priority for UNESCO since its foundation. Recognizing its crucial role in global peace and prosperity, the Organization supports African youth, promotes African perspectives through initiatives like the General History of Africa project, and encourages knowledge sharing and intercultural dialogue, connecting places of memory and museums of slavery in Africa, the Americas, and Europe. Socio-economic perspective: Africa’s future is closely tied to its demographic trend, with a youth population expected to reach 830 million by 2050. This holds immense potential if and only if youth are given access to quality education and training opportunities. We must strengthen #education systems, particularly higher education, to address the global knowledge imbalances and dependencies. Today, only 1% of global scientific research is produced in Africa. UNESCO’s Campus Africa programme aims to enhance higher education and research ecosystems, as well as mobility and employability on the continent. The common thread connecting these approaches, is easy to say: it’s about peace. As UNESCO’s Constitution says: “Peace must be founded, if it is not to fail, upon the intellectual and moral solidarity of humankind.” This is the spirit of the global network of UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks. The number of UNESCO Chairs in Africa is growing. These Chairs are a key modality for enhancing such intellectual and scientific solidarity. It is a means of redressing knowledge exclusions, inequalities, hierarchies, and epistemic injustice, which is no less important than social injustice. Learn more via the link in the comment below 👇

Lecture series | "A History of Heritage: UNESCO and the Invention of Heritage Discourse", by Kyrill Kunakhovich Ubiquitous today, the word "heritage" was rarely used before the 1960s. This talk investigates how and why it emerged by looking at the concept's most ardent promoter: UNESCO. Founded in 1945, UNESCO initially focused on global #development projects. In the organization's early documents, "heritage" appears more often as a hindrance to be overcome than as a #legacy to treasure. By 1972, however, UNESCO had reinvented itself as a champion of heritage, adopting the landmark World Heritage Convention with which it is now synonymous. To explain what happened, this talk situates UNESCO in the Global Sixties, a time of immense social and political upheaval. For the dozens of postcolonial states that joined the organization in this decade, the discourse of #heritage served to assert new national identities. For countries of the Eastern Bloc, it functioned as a way of distancing themselves from the USSR. Across the #West, interest in heritage rose as faith in progress started to fade, thanks to domestic protest movements and geopolitical anxieties. "Heritage" offered a shared vocabulary for discussing #identity in an era of radical #change, as well a new way of linking past, present, and future. Chair: Sharon Macdonald 📅 Wednesday, 29 May, 16:00-18:00 📍 Kurssaal Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik | Campus Nord – Haus 3, Philippstr. 13, 10115 Berlin 🎟 Free admission - no registration required #inherit #heritage #heritageintransformation #UNESCO #Humboldt #University #globalheritage #berlin #research #fellowship #morethanhuman #decentringthewest #decentringthehuman #transformingvalue
