With the population growth and the expansion of residential colonies, the government's preparedness to create infrastructure to cater to basic essential facilities like drinking water, power supply, and road connectivity has not been considered as part of advanced planning. Consequently, the entire population is left without regular and proper electric and water supply, leading to widespread suffering due to these essential deficiencies. Today, we see power curtailments even in the summer months and a considerable reduction in drinking water supply. It raises the question: what are the huge salaries and perks for the officials at the helm of affairs for if these basic issues remain unresolved, and how can it be called good governance? @office of LG J&K

The chaos continues under the Lawless Labor Government. On one hand, we have the Health Minister telling Tennant Creek residents she is focused on disease mitigation through mosquito control in Tennant Creek but, on the other hand, we have the Infrastructure Minister refusing to maintain the Tennant Creek Town Drains and allowing mosquitos to breed on our doorstep. Under the Labor Government it seems that opportunities for local business and local jobs are becoming less. A check of the town drains reveal serious mismanagement and neglect by the Labor Government. The Tennant Creek town drains are a Northern Territory Government asset and play a significant role in helping to reduce flooding but without a maintenance plan in place they have become less effective and reduced the flow of water. The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents is paramount - the town drains are overflowing with large amounts of vegetation which needs to be cleared to allow water to flow freely away from built-up areas. We have many local contractors employing local people that can easily complete this important project. Like many other infrastructure projects it seems the Barkly region has been abandoned by the Lawless Labor Government!

In times of recession, it is crucial for our province to prioritize supporting local contractors and suppliers to ensure economic stability and community well-being. It is disheartening to witness out-of-town contractors leaving jobs incomplete or in poor conditions, which ultimately harms our local economy and community. When hiring a local contractor or supplier, their reputation and pride are at stake, providing an added level of assurance that the job will be done well. By choosing local businesses, we not only support our economy but also foster a sense of community pride and collaboration. It is imperative for councils to act proactively in directing spending towards local contractors and suppliers, as this not only safeguards the quality of work but also helps to keep money circulating within our province. Let us prioritize the well-being of our community by investing in local businesses and supporting the growth and prosperity of our region.

A decent article, and to quote Peter Apps key conclusion/points: "As a closing thought, I think what bothers me most about this manifesto is what isn’t in it. The ideas mostly range from promising, to fine, to bad but not terrible. But it doesn’t actually offer anything to tackle the big challenges of the housing crisis. What are we going to do about the volume house builder model which doesn’t provide the right kind of housing at the right prices? What are we going to do about the funding crisis in social housing? What are we going to do for people who can’t pay the rent and are saving nothing for their retirement? What are we going to do about our increasingly unaffordable cities, the social cleansing that results and the disappearing, displaced communities that are leaving them? What are we going to do about the tens of thousands of mothers stuck with their children indefinitely in temporary housing because neither benefits nor wages come close to paying the rent? These are the sort of questions we need politicians to answer. And while this manifesto isn’t all bad, it doesn’t do that".

Some of you will know that I've been working with civil servants in DLUHC over the last 12 months (with others in Lichfields UK) supporting the work relating the Levelling Up and Regeneration Act. I'm involved with the plan-making side of the reforms in particular, and I have to say it's a privilege to do so. My colleague Matthew Spry has just released this blog that outlines the challenges that lie ahead for the new Government. It's excellent. Here's a quote: "Boosting housing completions in the first couple of years of the coming parliament will therefore largely be a product of what can be done to immediately unlock stalled applications already in the system (such as those held back by nutrients), general economic confidence, or through other financial measures. Beyond that, given the time it takes to prepare a planning application (typically 6-12 months), any new policy designed to achieve the increase in output would need to be in place almost immediately." Yes, "almost immediately." He then goes on to outline five planning policy elements likely to be necessary if the Government is serious about aiming for its 1.5m homes target - see the link below. ♨ So it's full steam ahead. If you would like a briefing from us on this, then do get in touch. #planningreform #newgovernment #planningpermission #localplans

Today we are thrilled to launch our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act Funding Handbook for Access to Clean Drinking Water in Tribal Communities! Unprecedented resources have been made available through the BIL and IRA, providing immense opportunities for addressing critical environmental and infrastructure needs and offering targeted funding to address the clean drinking water needs of Tribal communities. However, moving funds from the agencies into the hands of Tribes is proving to be challenging. This Handbook will serve as a critical reference guide for Tribes seeking to access and utilize funding from the two federal acts to increase, improve, and maintain access to clean drinking water. The Handbook provides a road map to support Tribes in successfully navigating the entire funding process - from identifying water access project needs to obtaining the funds necessary for planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining essential projects. By transforming the federal approach to Tribal water access, UACW envisions a future where federal funds are effectively utilized, resources are adequately secured, and Tribal water access challenges are significantly mitigated over the next 20 years. More information is available at: www.tribalcleanwater.org.
