Recently, Nick Davidov posted about “smart money.” The very next day, a16z crypto announced their Oxygen program, providing startups with essential GPU resources in exchange for equity. In reality, money is just one type of resource, alongside networks, technology, sales support, and strategic partnerships. You can’t just throw money at a problem and hope it goes away. But the Oxygen approach represents a new evolution in venture capital, giving a16z a unique competitive edge. What really impresses me is how a16z has shifted the traditional financial leverage model from relying solely on client funds (as seen in the advertising industry) to a model of investment conversion. Here, investments in computing power are essentially transformed into venture capital, gaining the multipliers associated with the VC market.
