Today at #COP29 , we were honored to meet and speak to Leonore Gewessler Austrian Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy,Mobility, Innovation and technology as well as serving as the EU lead negotiator on adaptation and Lukas Hammer, the Austrian Member of parliament from the Green Party. In our meeting, we delved into a comprehensive discussion on adaptation and its crucial role in addressing the impacts of climate change, with a particular emphasis on adaptation finance. We explored the growing need for targeted financial mechanisms to support vulnerable communities and ecosystems in building resilience to climate shocks. Key points included the challenges in mobilizing sufficient funds for adaptation efforts, especially for developing countries that bear the brunt of climate impacts despite contributing the least to global emissions. As well as the role of international frameworks like the Green Climate Fund and other multilateral initiatives. The conversation also highlighted the importance of prioritizing equity in adaptation finance, ensuring that resources reach marginalized and frontline communities. Moreover, we examined the need for robust tracking and accountability systems to measure the effectiveness of adaptation funding and its impact on long-term resilience.#AdaptationInFocus #AdaptationFinanceNow

On the brink of this year’s United Nations #climate summit, #COP29, governments are grappling with how to devise their next climate plans. These are meant to include bolder pledges and explain how policymakers intend to achieve them. They also need to account for budgetary constraints, a cost-of-living crisis, the wish for energy independence and use of domestic natural resources – and, very apposite for this week, election outcomes. But BloombergNEF analysis suggests that while some Group-of-20 governments have made headway on implementing robust policies to tackle climate change, others have not. My colleague Maia (Maeva) Godemer and I are happy to release the fifth edition of BNEF's Climate Policy Factbook, which assesses the G-20’s performance in three green policy areas that would accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy without considerable government outlay: fossil-fuel subsidies, carbon pricing and climate-risk policy. https://lnkd.in/e5bgh476

#COP29 Breaking the Climate Finance Barrier- the $300 billion climate finance pledge announced at #COP29 marks a watershed moment in our climate journey, but it must be more than just another promise. We've witnessed too many commitments fade into missed opportunities. This time must be different. The Green Climate Fund's leadership and innovative approach have already shown us what's possible - blending public and private capital to create actual climate actions and paradigm shift for our vulnerable communities. But we need to think bigger. The transition to a sustainable future requires trillions, not billions. It demands new, innovative and flexible financial models to be accessed by direct communities. Let's transform this $300 billion pledge from a headline into a historic catalyst for change. The science is clear, the tools are available, and the time for bold action is now. Together, we can build a resilient, equitable future - not through promises alone, but through immediate, decisive action that matches the scale of our climate emergency. https://lnkd.in/gd72jY-B

Climate deniers in power: what consequences? "There is widespread concern about the future of the climate accord after the election in the US of Donald Trump, who has pledged to exit the agreement for the second time. Before the talks, the UN secretary general, António Guterres, said a second US departure might “cripple” the global deal to limit heating to below 2C above preindustrial levels. There are fears that other countries may leave the international climate agreements, including those led by climate deniers such as Argentina." 🌍 Information Event for Businesses: Aligning with EU Climate Policies Amidst Ukraine's EU Accession Journey Despite the ongoing war, Ukraine remains committed to accelerating its efforts to join the EU as a full member. This journey also includes aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its impacts. At the event with more than 80 participants, we explored: 🔹 Key EU climate policies and their global impact 🔹 The evolution of EU climate policy and its effects on businesses 🔹 Major milestones from Climate Change Conferences (CoPs) 🔹 Why the CoPs are critical for business strategies A key takeaway from business leaders was how essential climate alignment is for competitiveness. As Dr. Valentin Gvozdiy of UKRHYDROENERGO said: "I am calling on business representatives: please do not think that climate challenges are some abstract negotiations. Climate policies have long been a factor affecting business strategies and competitiveness. Ukrainian businesses operating globally must adapt to climate realities. This transition to decarbonization is not just about compliance with EU and international standards—it’s about gaining access to international markets, securing investments, and adopting new technologies." For businesses aiming to stay ahead of market shifts and towards carbon neutrality, staying informed is crucial. It helps them anticipate risks, like extreme weather or resource scarcity, and understand how climate finance can support their transition. "And nothing is more effective than learning from peers" as Arvid Tuerkner, Managing Director Ukraine and Moldova, EBRD stated in his key speech. This event was a collaboration between the Ukrainian Climate Office (UCO) which is commisioned by BMWK via the International Climate Initiative and cofunded by the EU, the Ukrainian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources (MEPR), and Chapter Zero Ukraine and Caucasus. The role of nature for reducing emissions, enabling adaptation whilst also improving the livelihoods of the poorest communities is well established. The new climate finance goal needs to recognise the need for equity. And in practice this means: 1. The poorest countries and communities need a minimum threshold for support 2. Both Nature and Adaptation need be properly reflected with a minimum floor (see letter below and https://lnkd.in/egJ2suDY) 3. And we need to recognise those with special roles as stewards of nature, as holders of solutions and of greater vulnerability of those at the frontline of climate impacts - Indigenous Peoples, local communities as well as women, children & older people
