Quick Miami F1 logistics Facts:
From Shanghai to Miami, F1 teams are mastering the art of logistics with enough twists and turns to make even Monaco jealous.
Each team transports roughly 50 tonnes of freight.
Take Haas, for example. They pack everything they need on four articulated lorries and rendezvous with a 747 cargo plane at East Midlands Airport. Every item is loaded onto 12 aircraft pallets for the 10-hour flight from the UK to Florida. Meanwhile, less essential equipment, like tables and chairs for their hospitality unit, makes the voyage across the Atlantic by sea.
At any given time, every team has up to six different containers crisscrossing the world as sea freight, eventually catching up with the F1 schedule. Miami freight might come straight from Australia, heading off to Singapore next, while another set is heading from Southeast Asia to Canada.
Once in Miami, air pallets are transported from the nearest cargo-handling airport via articulated truck to the pit lane, where they're placed outside each team’s garage. As soon as the team's crew arrives, they unbox containers, set up the garage, and piece together the 5,000 components that make up a Formula 1 car.
And it doesn't stop there. If a team has new parts to test, those pieces often arrive as checked-in oversized baggage at their departing terminal. Separate planes are used to transport tires by Pirelli, while Formula 1 handles the 150 trackside cameras and miles of cables for TV transmission.
Once the race ends, teams swiftly pack down their garages, with fork-lift trucks bustling about the pit lane to dismantle everything. The cars are stripped bare and carefully packaged back into air freight boxes or loaded onto trucks, ready for the next Grand Prix. With time zones to navigate and long flying times, precision is key to ensure no delays impact the next round of the World Championship.
