Tick, tick… Day 1️⃣ of Nigerian Satellite Week was a success! It was our Press Day, and the energy in the room was electric. We had thought-provoking discussions on how satellite technology is transforming Nigeria’s digital landscape, with real-life examples of its impact on sectors like agriculture and connectivity. The press briefing was presided over by: ✅ Myself ✅ Executive Director Technical NIGCOMSAT: Abiodun Attah ✅ Executive Director Finance NIGCOMSAT: Adama Akure ✅ Director General RASCOM: Timothy Ashong We shared NIGERIAN COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE LIMITED (NIGCOMSAT)’s goal for the event—to bring together experts, industry players, investors, policy leaders, innovators, and decision-makers from across the public and private sectors, both locally and internationally. While the main focus was the official unveiling of the Nigerian Satellite, the conversation naturally shifted, and it was inspiring to see so many passionate voices discussing how we can all leverage satellite technology for economic growth. Too woo woo? Give me a minute. I recently had the privilege of attending many of the incredibly well-curated talks at the EQL:HER Lounge at Africa Tech Festival. The talks were powerful and tangible, facilitating a space for people to connect and share. It really got me thinking about abundance. So often, in business, we concentrate our efforts and thoughts of abundance around money or profits. Good, great! Makes total sense. But what I believe is left out of the conversation around this is viewing abundance as much bigger than that. Abundance is also the truly amazing people that we meet and network with. The friendships and support systems that are formed from it. The talks, conferences and countless events that we attend where we have the opportunity to learn and (hopefully) challenge what we know to be true. Clients and projects we work on that are aligned with our values and the difference we want to make in the world.  All of those put together makes our lives plentiful. The invitation here is to manage our own perspectives and perceptions. 🎙️ Your turn! Day 3 of Africa Tech Festival and that is a wrap for me! I leave Africa Tech Festival 2024 behind me feeling inspired and optimistic about the futures that we are creating in Africa. I have met and networked with some of the most amazing people with the most awe-inspiring stories. I will share these stories over the next couple of weeks. Excited for what these collaborations can bring and the futures we can create together. Interestingly one of the highlights of this event, where a lot of networking takes place, was the panel discussion on networking that I attended today. The discussion was lead by Matshepo Sehloho with the panel consisting of Ayanda Siboto, Kimlynn Temple and Hassan Adam. Some of the takeaways that I bring back to my team at Salt: - Try, fail, learn, go again, - Adding to your network is more important than taking from it, - Take care of the relationship outside of the work, - There is no blueprint for fitting in (loved this Ayanda Siboto) - Don't tell a story that you think wants to be heard, be authentic, - Show appreciation, your network consists of humans, not resources, - Keep putting yourself in awkward situations, - Skip the video meeting, go for the coffee, - Connect your connections, - Increasing your network, increases your net worth, - Leave the room with more than it had before you entered it, - We all have imposter syndrome, deal with it. Thanks so much for bringing your authentic selves to the conversation today, I learned a lot.

Before heading off to celebrate Thanksgiving, I’ll be joining Online Safety SIG roundtable discussion on how to ensure trust and safety without compromising Internet connectivity. I recently wrote a blog about this topic. While it doesn’t introduce entirely new ideas, it emphasizes an important point: when assessing the impact of decisions, laws, and regulations on Internet access, we must not base our evaluations on the country, the political party behind the decision, or even whether it is legally binding (as the "law of the land" does not justify breaking the Internet or violating human rights). Instead, we should rely on our enduring principles: What is the decision’s impact on human rights and Internet freedom? How does the decision affect people’s access to the Internet? This quarter I was fortunate to attend more than a handful of relevant tech conferences remotely or in-person. They were not equal in terms of their purposefulness. By purposefulness, I mean considering tech as a means to an end, specially a big world problem, instead of a glorified end in itself. At the bottom of my purposeful tech tree, I placed AWS:reinvent as it was mainly focused on highlighting the improved performance and comprehensiveness of their technology. At the top, I put Estoril Conferences and MozFest Zambia, as they placed societal problems such as healthcare or inequality as the ends technology should be put to serve. You may argue that Estoril Conferences are not strictly tech conferences. They cover topics such as war (and peace) or climate. I kept it there because it serves as a guidepost to what "strictly tech" conferences should be doing—starting with the (most important) problems first. Also, it devoted quite a substantial part of its stage time to addressing how tech could improve healthcare, including the last session on the attribution of the 6th Patient Innovation Awards to the best tech products for that purpose. Maybe you had a different experience, and would make some adjustments to my ranking. But I think it's about time we start ranking technology and its and the stages it is put on display in terms of how it is helping solve important problems and not its performance in a vacuum.
