🌍 Reflections from the recent Africa Tech Festival in Cape Town 🇿🇦 Our Investment Manager Philani Mzila CDFA joined an esteemed panel of tech ecosystem leaders consisting of Miranda Perumal (Founder of scale), Vuyani Tati (Managing Director, Startupbootcamp AfriTech), Sherif Nessim (Founder and Managing Partner, Jedar Capital), and Zachariah George (Managing Partner, Launch Africa Ventures) to unpack one of the most nuanced challenges in startup investing: crafting fair and transparent term sheets. The Collaborative Spirit of Funding Imagine term sheets not as rigid legal documents, but as a collaborative journey between founders and investors. The panel emphasised that this process is about building mutual understanding and alignment. The Ethics of Valuation One fascinating discussion point was the ethical considerations around round pricing. Not all valuation changes are created equal. Context matters – whether it's time elapsed or fundamental shifts in the company's trajectory. The Bigger Picture This isn't just about numbers on a page. It's about creating an ecosystem where African startups can thrive, where communication is clear, and where both founders and investors feel respected and heard. 💡 Key Learnings: • Founders should take the lead in drafting initial terms that reflect their startup's vision • Investors are partners, not just financiers – they're there to guide and clarify financial complexities • Transparency isn't just a buzzword; open and honest communication are the foundation of successful startup-investor relationships Stay tuned for more insights from Africa Tech Festival and what we got up to While you're at it, visit our website www.54collective.vc #54Collective #AfricaTechFestival

As we approach Africa Early Stage Investor Summit 2024, I'm reflecting on Mauritius' unique position in the African investment landscape. 🇲🇺🌍 Having witnessed Mauritius' role as a gateway for African investments during my private equity days, I'm convinced we can replicate this success in early-stage investing. 🚀 Since COVID-19, we've seen a surge in innovative entrepreneurs tackling real societal and environmental challenges. Yet, a critical gap remains — early-stage funding. Too many promising ventures wither due to lack of financial support. 🌱 At Mo Angels, we're proud to have nurtured entrepreneurs from their earliest days, watching them grow and make an impact. But we need more. We need policies that encourage angel investing, innovative financing instruments, and a shift in mindset 🔄💡. In this dynamic era, Mauritius has a significant opportunity to position itself as a key player in Africa's entrepreneurial ecosystem. We have the foundation to become a launchpad for innovative ventures across the continent. 🙌🏽 #AESIS2024 is an important step in this journey. It's a chance for us to learn, connect, and collaboratively address the challenges in early-stage investing. 🤝📈 #AESIS2024 #EarlyStageInvesting #MoAngels #AngelInvesting #StartupEcosystem #Innovation #Africa #Mauritius

Proud of the work we’re doing at Secha Capital to reshape how investment is approached in African markets, especially by investing in traditional industries. This article dives into why our operator-investor model matters and how it’s helping businesses thrive in unique ways. https://lnkd.in/ePreW7V6
It's #TechTidesTuesday! 🌍 "The standard VC playbook often overlooks critical African contextual factors," says Rushil Vallabh, co-founder and co-managing director at Secha Capital. 📰 Andile Masuku's TechTides column in African Tech Roundup and Business Report this week features in-trench insights from Vallabh and one of Secha's operator-investors Masedi Madisha as their model challenges conventional VC wisdom. 🔗 Link to the full article in the comments! Key takeaways: 1. Secha's contrarian approach focusing on traditional industries is gaining validation with a R300M first close of their second fund 💰 2. Long-hold strategy funds outperform short-duration funds by 2-3x in developing markets 📈 3. Employee equity ownership shows promising results - 90% choose shares over cash bonuses 🌟 4. Recent tech startup failures highlight limitations of the "grow-at-any-cost" mentality in African markets 🚧 As Africa's tech ecosystem navigates the aftermath of the 'grow-at-all-costs' era, could Secha's model bridge the gap between traditional and digital economies? #VentureCapital #Innovation #StartupAfrica #ImpactInvesting
