When healthcare projects require seamless EHR/EMR integration, Epic systems are our trusted go-to solutions. Why? Here are five reasons from Mind Studios’ experience 👇 1️⃣ Interoperability Epic supports HL7 and FHIR standards to ensure patient data flows seamlessly across healthcare systems, enabling collaborative care among providers, labs, and apps. 2️⃣ Flexibility & scalability Epic’s modular architecture lets you tailor your setup to fit your organization, starting with essential features and expanding as you grow. 3️⃣ Optimized clinical resources Epic helps streamline workflows with automation and real-time data access. As a result, swift patient record retrieval and decision support tools enable faster diagnoses and treatments. 4️⃣ Data-driven decisions Epic’s advanced analytics empower facilities to optimize operations. Whether it's fine-tuning staffing levels or resource management, actionable insights boost efficiency and patient care. 5️⃣ Integration opportunities Epic’s open architecture and APIs allow seamless connectivity. By leveraging HL7, FHIR, and other standards, it's simpler to build custom integrations and tap into third-party tools. By the way, in 2022, Epic’s operating market share among health systems and academic medical centers reached nearly 60%. If you’d like to join the list of organizations using Epic, reach to out to us for a consultation on integration 🤝

This is an interesting article because EHR companies, like Epic and Oracle's Cerner, have made siloing data a major part of their business model. Overall, I like EPIC’s ability to review records from other EPIC shops. It also has a nod to interoperability with its “Care Everywhere“ feature. However, this is often a disorganized and outdated collection of information. Using it requires a ninja level of both tech expertise and medical knowledge possessed mainly by younger physicians and chief residents. I am a fan (and advisor) of companies like Zus Health focused on user-friendly, comprehensive, and up-to-date interoperable health care data tools.

Interesting insights as always Joshua Liu We are about to role out EPIC in NSW as our Single Digital Patient Record but that name doesn’t really reflect the reality as the majority of people in NSW’s longitudinal health data sits in ageing server tech systems in Primary Care not in NSW Health so it is only a Single Digit Patient Record for NSW Health not the population of NSW. One of the biggest messages that came out of the Connected Care summit is the importance of culture and we operate culturally very differently to the US so this brings risk. There have been many clunky integrations to connect state and federal health systems in NSW to allow connectivity between hospitals, primary and community care but how and whose responsibility will it me to ensure we don’t lose that existing connectivity and how do we ensure our innovative Australian tech industry are included in our strategy. It will be an interesting one to watch. #digitalhealth Jeremy Knibbs Health Services Daily
Co-founder/CEO, SeamlessMD | physician entrepreneur | enabling health systems to digitize patient care journeys with automated reminders, education and symptom monitoring - leading to lower LOS, readmissions, and costs
Back in 2017 we were begging Epic and Cerner to integrate with us. They had both just opened up their 3rd party app ecosystems: Epic’s App Orchard and Cerner’s CODE program (boy have times changed since then!) We emailed countless times. We called. No response. In our minds we could add so much value to health systems. Why wouldn’t they want to integrate with us? But then we figured it out! In less than a year we got Epic and Cerner to build direct, turn key integrations with us (and now MEDITECH too). By 2018, we ended up being among the first companies in both their app ecosystems. So what was the trick? The trick was for the request to not come from us… but to come from their most valued health systems customers. And that started with creating value for those customers before even asking for an integration. We had a large Epic customer and a larger Cerner customer. We delivered great value for them. Demonstrated amazing patient engagement and improved health outcomes. And then we asked those health systems: wouldn’t this be even better if we integrated SeamlessMD with your EHR to streamline clinician and patient workflows? And of course they said “Absolutely.” So they contacted Epic and Cerner and requested they integrate with us. All of a sudden, the EHR vendors started responding to our emails, and moved us quickly through their integration process. In retrospect, it’s obvious: these behemoth vendors get startups contacting them all day long. Why would the call from my random company matter? It wouldn’t matter… until a customer demanded it to matter. It’s the only way for EHR vendors to validate that the integration is worth their time. Health Tech startups sometimes complain that the EHRs are intentionally avoiding the integration. The reality is that if health system customers demand the integration, the EHRs HAVE to listen… it’s coming from their customers after all. But if you’re not delivering incredible value to health systems… what right have you earned to demand the integration yourself? The truth is you haven’t. Now the one exception is there are certain Health Tech products that require an EHR integration to even work in the first place. If that’s you, then it’s still up to YOU to sell health systems on the concept first. That’s not Epic, Cerner or MEDITECH’s job. Focus on delivering value for your health system customers, and the integrations will come.
