The 2018 Farm Bill expired over six months ago, and the next one is still many conversations away. What’s the hold-up? In our latest blog post, farmer and Pasa's Farm Bill Campaign Organizer Lindsey Shapiro spells out how the farm safety net is one of the principal fault lines facing members of Congress, why the current farm safety net is neither environmentally nor financially sustainable, and ways we can convince Congress to rethink the farm safety net status quo. 📣 Learn more and take action at https://lnkd.in/ekQSqc9g. . . . #FarmBill #FarmLaw #farmbusiness #SustainableAgriculture #regenerativefarming #regenag #smallfarm #sustainablefarming #farmsafetynet

Introducing one of the six 2024 #Experimental Acres projects - liquid manure application using a dragline, conducted by Wade Deaken of Appinbrook Farms Ltd. near Elmwood in Grey County, Ontario. 🌱 This project involves surface application of liquid manure with a dragline after the first cut haylage is removed. It aims to remove headland crop damage and compaction from tankers, which is currently how they apply liquid manure, because typically, the headland does very poorly for second cut after tire traffic. The test area includes 40 acres of hay ground. About Grey County's Experimental Acres program: The Grey County Experimental Acres program supports local farmers in piloting new, regenerative practices to improve yield, soil health and overall sustainability. This year’s six selected projects range from 1 to 50 acres, including intercropping (more than one crop in the same field), rotational grazing, using wool pellets as a soil amendment, and more! Since 2023, the County of Grey has supported pilot projects on 12 farms, directly impacting practices on 175 acres of farmland and helping advance Going Green in Grey, the County’s Climate Action Plan. Thank you to Grey Agricultural Services for partnering on this initiative! Check out the full farm profiles at: https://lnkd.in/e66wsnTj

In the past few years, the popularity of carbon farming as diversification has risen for landholders. While it’s still sometimes a contentious discussion, more and more farmers are entering the sphere and reaping the financial benefits. But even as the field becomes more stable, the length of the projects means not a single project has run it’s course, and therefore some of the legalities have no precendent. Georgina Lamond from Moin Morris Schaefer spoke to me for Growing Country to outline what landholders should know when considering entering the carbon space. #carbonfarming #GrowingCountry #diversification

Great article emphasizing an important point: with climate change making severe weather more common and industrial farming squeezing margins integrating solar is a key strategy to ensure the survival of the small/medium sized farm. Second point that the article doesn’t make -agrivoltaics (or solar above farming) allows for continued agricultural production offering an elegant solution to the food/fuel debate. Only 15% of farmers have incorporated renewable energy on their farms according to the last farm census so there is plenty of opportunity for growth that will help meet our decarbanization goals in a way that enhances grazing land or food production if done right. #agrivoltaics #landuse #solar #farming
