ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2022 achieves a model energy code determination from the DOE, increasing energy efficiency in commercial buildings. According to the DOE's technical analysis, buildings meeting the updated standard will increase national average site energy estimate savings from 9.8% to 14%. This is a significant milestone towards global building decarbonization. The updated standard includes several key changes, such as customizable energy credits, new mechanical system efficiency performance options, and expanded criteria for whole-building air leakage testing. Additionally, it is the first time that on-site generation of renewable energy systems is incorporated as a prescriptive requirement of the standard. States must certify within two years of DOE's affirmative determination that their commercial building code provisions meet or exceed the updated edition of Standard 90.1. You can learn more about DOE's model energy code determination, including specific requirements and deadlines, at https://lnkd.in/gjQXBGrE. #ASHRAE #energyefficiency #commercialbuildings #globalbuildingdecarbonization #renewableenergy #energycodes

Very timely and relevant study as BESS penetration continues its rapid growth trajectory in Australia. Both battery chemistries dealt with in this report ie Vanadium and Lithium ion-LFP are are the ones dominating this space and managing process safety is critical to success
Energy Transition Leader | Low carbon H2-Ammonia-CCS Value Chain Expert | Executive Development Coach
Australia's Renewed Focus on Battery Energy Storage Safety and Efficiency The Australian Energy Council's Commitment to Grid-Scale BESS Best Practices Key Takeaways from the BESS Guidance Report: - The Australian Energy Council (AEC) has recognized the importance of energy storage systems, particularly in the transition to renewable energy sources. - GHD has developed guidance material for grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with a focus on lithium-ion and vanadium chemistries. - The guidance material addresses risk assessments, site selection, safety, emergency planning, and environmental impacts. - A classification system for BESS facilities based on storage capacity is proposed to tailor risk assessments accordingly. Background and Importance: - As Australia moves toward renewable energy, maintaining system resilience to match supply with demand is crucial. - Recent incidents involving battery storage have underscored the need for comprehensive safety and risk management strategies. - The guidance aims to harmonize practices among AEC member organizations and promote safe, efficient energy storage operations. In my view, the steps taken by the AEC and GHD are pivotal in ensuring the safe deployment of BESS facilities. The guidance material reflects an understanding that, like any emerging technology, battery storage comes with inherent risks that must be managed. The adoption of a classification system for BESS facilities is a logical approach to addressing these risks, allowing for nuanced and appropriate safety measures that match the scale and complexity of each installation. The report also highlights the need for continuous learning and adaptation, a reminder that as technology and industry practices evolve, so too must our approaches to safety and efficiency. How can industry stakeholders contribute to the ongoing development of safety practices for BESS? What challenges might arise in implementing the proposed classification system for BESS facilities? I invite you to share your insights on this evolving landscape and how we can collectively ensure a safer transition to renewable energy storage solutions.
