This new internship summit offered through the Career Center helps BYU-Idaho students find internships in Washington, D.C. As the article states, the Summit has two options for students to choose from: 1. “Program Ready” is designed for students who already have an internship lined up and require additional resources in the Washington D.C. area, such as housing. 2. "Program Consideration" is catered to students who are considering internships in the D.C. area but have not yet secured one. "Employers Miss Out on Diverse Talent Due to Strict Criteria: 30% of employers reported having unfilled internships in 2023. Employers with unfilled internships tend to have more selective hiring preferences, with 58% of them selecting five or more attributes as important when hiring interns, compared to 47% of all employers. The "Intern" is Not a Clearly Defined Role: The term "internship" is not consistently defined across industries and employers. Many employers offer internship-like experiences but use different terms to describe their programs, and employers who use the term "internship" may offer a range of experiences with varying durations, settings, and student populations. Internship Quality is Often Low: Despite the perceived value of internships, a significant number of them lack the necessary structure and focus on skills development to provide meaningful experiences for students. 30% of employers with internships offer low-quality experiences, with interns not consistently receiving elements of structured support or opportunities for skills development."

Internships are essential for college students as they provide hands-on experience, help build professional networks, and enhance resumes, making graduates more competitive in the job market. They also offer a valuable opportunity to explore career paths and develop industry-specific skills. According to National Association of College and Employers More than two-thirds of 2024 graduating seniors engaged in an internship experience during their college career, up from around 61% of 2023 graduates and outpacing pre-pandemic 2019 graduates . More than half of interns—57%—reported they were paid for their internship. That’s down slightly from 2023, when 59% were paid, but the overall trend is toward paid internships.
