The United States Department of Defense's efforts through the State Liaisons program highlight a crucial initiative for military families. Yet, the stark absence of progress in Virginia, particularly in suicide prevention, signals a critical oversight. We must bridge this gap by integrating the lived experiences of our military community into policy-making. Bold action is necessary to create a support system as resilient as our military families themselves. "Spouse employment is a significant contributor to family well-being and experiences are wide-ranging. More than half (56.5%) of active duty spouses are employed (39.1% full-time and 17.4% part-time), 21.8% are unemployed and looking for work, and 16.5% indicated they were unemployed and not looking for work. Following significant budget cuts that prompted backlash, the commission reviewed 10 proposals aimed at ensuring the program's viability for spouses and dependents of veterans. A commission is exploring options to ensure this program's continuation, recognizing its impact on: - Employment opportunities for transitioning service members - Economic growth through educated workforce development - Enhanced quality of life for military families The program, which has seen participation quadruple—from $12 million in 2019 to an estimated $190 million by 2026—provides vital support to over 8,000 students annually. Investing in education empowers our veterans to: - Acquire in-demand skills for civilian careers - Pursue higher education without financial burdens - Contribute to Virginia's thriving economy Proposed solutions include creating specialized funds, adjusting eligibility requirements, and promoting fiscal sustainability through budget predictability, ensuring continued educational access for military families.
