The Middle East, which has been an energy hub for decades, has started its transition towards low carbon. The success of COP28 in Dubai, held last November, marked a significant milestone in global climate action. The UAE Consensus, a historic agreement reached by nearly 200 countries, commits to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This will boost renewable energy's contribution to the UAE's energy mix from 25% to 50%, with the goal of reaching net zero by 2050. 💰 We need to double (!) investment in renewables. Yes, we see record investments in renewables. 🔺 But no. It's not enough. Global investments in renewable power and fuels reached USD 623 billion in 2023. However we need to at least *double* this - to at least USD 1,300 billion annually, if we want to reach the goals set at COP28 UAE and under the Paris Agreement. One big stumbling block for an accelerated #energytransition: high capital costs and rising interest rates, especially in emerging markets. The costs of capital for renewable energy projects is reaching as high as 10%, compared with less than 4% in high-income countries. In my #20for20 series commemorating two decades of REN21, Figure 3 sheds light on a stark reality: we're amplifying energy inequality.
