https://lnkd.in/eTakBijh Two things upset me about this article. 1. The tragedy of what happened to this trainee and the lack of support he reportedly received. 2. That as an older doctor, my immediate reaction was to be critical of younger physicians who don't have the stoicism and willpower that my generation had in the really bad old days when residency training was truly tough. We just had to put our heads down and accept this right of passage. As a semi-retired internal medicine physician, I now advocate for more value-based/patient-centered changes in the healthcare system. One thing we need to do is pay more attention to the deleterious effects medical training and practice can have on ourselves and our colleagues. Depression and high rates of suicide are far too often attributed to "burnout," especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Still, I'm afraid much of this is self-induced as we continue to expect healthcare providers (physicians, nurses, and many other professionals) to accept a work environment that is not sustainable. If healers don't look out for each other, who will be left to look out for those we are here to help?

A: "The most rewarding thing is the camaraderie with the rest of the faculty and staff and unshakable belief in ourselves and what we can do when we work together for a common goal. The faculty and administrators are all focused on making this school produce the best possible, welcoming, inclusive, nurturing, personal, and high-quality learning environment that we can create. The students we will be educating, training, and mentoring will play a significant role in the future of osteopathic medicine in the Mid-South region and the US as a whole. We are working to build a bright future for students." Q: What advice would you give to our new BUCOM cohort before they begin school in the fall? A: "Recognize that you had to compete aggressively to get to where you are; however, you are now done competing with each other, and you are now in the position where you should reach out and help your fellow students to your absolute best ability. What is your passion? In PT school everyone asked "What led you to the PT field?" While many students would rattle off personal experiences they had with injuries during sports and interacting with Physical Therapists who were treating family loved ones, I never had that connection. Yes, I was a high school athlete, but I never really got injured. I know I wanted to get into healthcare, and I knew I wanted to be a specialist in some area, but I also knew I didn't want to go to school for close to a decade to become a physician. PT seemed like a great choice with a Master's Degree, and I later went back to get my Doctorate. I certainly enjoyed treating patients, and the diagnosis was always the highlight, especially when the patient hadn't gotten better after multiple specialists failed them, but I have always felt i wanted to do more. I have always tried to figure out how I can reach a broader audience, fix more people, and offer a better experience to the patient. That is easier said than done. Breaking into a healthcare system that does so much to prevent change is no small feat. I've traveled down paths I thought would lead to a change, only to hit a dead end and be shut out when it was time to really make a significant difference. There are many people who talk about making change, who really don't want to disrupt the boat. and that is becoming apparent the more you research them. I want to make a real difference. For some reason I feel it is my calling. I can't explain it any other way. I think the design i am building with New Wave Medical Network is finally the key to making that difference. But I can't do it alone. I need Physical Therapists who want to move the profession forward into direct care. PCPs who want to team up with a PT to create a PT/PCP combo clinics, where the MSK issues are directed to the PT, and the bacterial, viral, and other issues are addressed by the PCP. New Wave Medical Network will assist with all the administrative needs, software, quality control, billing, and so much more, but we want to let clinicians regain their rightful place it directing the care through evidence based medicine. Don't worry about the reimbursement, we have a plan for disrupting that too that we can discuss, but right now we need to start building the clinical team to push the movement nationally, in every state, every major metro, and collect the proof to show our design is better than our current broken system. Is policy asks for more specialists the right way forward? At the European Academy of Neurology #BrainHealthSummit last week it was voiced that a rethink is needed. Dr Tarun Dua, Head of the Brain Health Unit at World Health Organization pointed towards the need for a #paradigmshift to a #transdisciplinary approach. The question then is how to use primary care, how to ensure nurses, clinical officers, occupational therapists etc have the right training. This is critical for a realistic and achievable approach to ensure we can meet patients needs in areas such as #brainhealth, #mentalhealth but will those with a therapy area focus accept and adapt? Worth discussing during #EuropeanMentalHealthWeek!

Conversely, new connections can be made in the brain 🧠 when learning takes place in the environment where a child is stimulated to learn new movement skills.
