Building From Within vs. Bringing In Fresh Talent
As a leader, I constantly grapple with the age-old leadership question: Is it better to promote from within, or seek fresh perspectives through lateral hires?
There's no easy answer.
Promoting from within rewards loyalty deepens institutional knowledge, and boosts morale. But it can also lead to stagnation or a lack of new ideas.
Lateral hiring injects fresh perspectives and diverse experiences but can disrupt existing dynamics and require a longer onboarding process.
Look at Google, renowned for its focus on internal mobility, yet they've also made strategic external hires to drive innovation. On the flip side, companies like McKinsey are famous for their "up or out" culture, favouring promotions over external recruitment.
So, what's the right approach?
I believe it's about finding the right balance for your specific needs and context. It's about understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches and tailoring your strategy accordingly.
What has your experience been and how do you approach this dilemma in your organisation?
