A sustainable maritime future depends on our ability to innovate while staying aligned with the rapidly changing global regulations that shape the industry’s evolution. The 40th ADIPEC has ended earlier this month with a bunch of exciting strategic conferences. Here are some takeaways and insights on #hydrogen. WE OVERPROMISED AND UNDERACHIEVED ·        Projects in the money gone up from $10b FID in 2020 to $75b FID in 2024. ·        Project maturity growing. ·        Clear shift from announcements and MoUs to putting concrete in the ground. ·        Investment in the industry is yet to gain momentum. TECHNOLOGY ·        De-risk technology by investing and showing commitment in order to increase credibility and convince the decision makers. ·        Standardization, no reinvention. ·        No colors any more (EU won’t give up). ·        To find new effective solutions, project developers must look for technologies out of Europe. GOVERNMENT ·        Without government support or penalties, it will never become commercial. ·        Real life experience shall be translated into rules and policies. ·        Clear regulations. Effectively implemented. ·        Carbon trade mechanism must be in place. MARKET ·        New business models demanded to unlock long term commitment. ·        Spot market to add to bilateral agreements between producers and consumers. It will create transparency, credibility, and bankability. ·        Increase volume to cut cost and drive demand.   CREDIBILITY ·        Lots of promises made, start rationalizing and re-cooperating. ·        Continue calibrating. Support nascent sector. ·        Assure commitment of politicians. ·        Align collectively and collaborate. First – create a market, then – compete. INFRASTRUCTURE ·        Projects fail due to expensive basic infrastructure. ·        Infrastructure first – projects after. ·        Infrastructure enables the offtake. ·        Infrastructure supports the scale-up. It deserves attention to be captured in policies and investing public money. ·        At the onset of industry, we need multiple options and choices. ·        Geopolitical and supply chain issues tell us to have diversification. ·        Large demand centers need several sources of affordable molecule. ·        Industry needs a competitive large-scale distribution. ·        Global centralized infrastructure (loses) versus scalable regional decentralization (wins). ·        Pipes are difficult + low addition of H2. Bad to combine and separate. ·        Ammonia is easier to transport and store, we know it well, but we need to move Hydrogen. Thus, use ammonia as ammonia, do not crack it back. ·        Distributed logistics with flexible scalability is the future where the maker and the end user meet. We drive our own fate and destiny. Goals are achievable. Barriers are addressable.
