Round 1 announcement of funded projects Thirty-six projects will share £32.4m from the first round of UKRI’s new cross research council responsive mode pilot scheme. The projects are designed to stimulate exciting new interdisciplinary research. Treatment for bile duct cancer, degradation of toxic organic pollutants, historical accounts that inform marine ecosystem management, and techniques to protect children’s digital data are among the breakthrough projects being funded. Round two details: https://lnkd.in/ePwNdRB2
Today we're announcing the first projects funded from our new interdisciplinary scheme, and launching the second round of funding. The UKRI cross research council responsive mode scheme is designed to break down silos and champion research that transcends, combines and significantly spans traditional discipline boundaries. Professor Alison Park, UKRI CRCRM Champion and Deputy Executive Chair of ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council said: "The perspectives of different disciplines, working together in collaboration, are vital to solving some of the most pressing problems we face as a society. "The projects announced today will drive progress across diverse fields by creating fresh approaches to research questions, methodologies and ways of working." Doing interdisciplinary research well is challenging but has great potential for innovation and insight, hence this call. I would like to highlight a couple of projects from the list that focus on areas I have had many conversations about with fellow researchers and that may therefore be of interest to colleagues, e.g. Jessica Ozan; Gayle Munro; Kully Kaur-Ballagan; Martin Wood; and others, I am sure. GRASPING DATA: co-creating physicalisations to empower young children to interact with, understand, and benefit from their personal data Led by Andrew Manches, The University of Edinburgh Professor Andrew Manches from The University of Edinburgh will lead a project to change perceptions about children and their personal data through the creation of cutting-edge, child-centred tools and teaching practices. The project will work with 270 children aged three to eight in schools, Edinburgh Zoo and Glasgow Science Centre to construct physical representations of personal data that children can touch, explore, talk about and learn with. It will contribute knowledge to early learning, cognitive psychology, child-centred design, data ethics, data visualisation and computer science. The greatest impact of this project will be on children, who will be able to engage, enjoy and understand their data-saturated world better. It will give them greater confidence that they should and can play a role in the design of their future. ANIMATING MINDS: triangulating the age-appropriate impact of children’s media Led by Tim Smith, University of the Arts London Professor Tim Smith from the University of the Arts London will lead a team across four research organisations to build an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can predict a video clip’s potential impact on children’s ability to learn, understand and develop self-control. The AI tool will be used by media creatives to check whether content is developmentally appropriate for their target audience, aiding in the creation of higher-quality content and allowing parents to make more informed decisions on content selection. This project will specifically focus on the impact of children’s media on children aged three to six, a key stage in neurocognition development. It will bring together a unique team of researchers from: children’s animation practice media theory developmental psychology neuroscience AI CHAILD: Children’s Agency In the age of AI: Leveraging InterDisciplinarity Led by Nigel Shadbolt, University of Oxford

passing on an opportunity "We are reaching out to ask for your organization’s help to spread the word that the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) is now accepting Problem Statements. Each year ACRP relies on airport stakeholders to identify key industry issues to guide the focus of its forthcoming research projects. From now until April 8th, stakeholders can submit problem statements for new research projects to take place in the FY2025 program year. ACRP is an industry-driven, applied research program that develops near-term, practical solutions to airport challenges. Problem statements inspire research that leads to the publication of no-cost guidelines, tools, best practices, databases, and/or other resources that will support practitioners in addressing current industry challenges.

📣 Contribute to the development of the Horizon Europe work programme 2025 by filling in one or more surveys! Don't miss this opportunity to provide input for the development of the Horizon Europe ‘main’ work programme 2025. Responses submitted through the survey will contribute to the co-design of the work programme 2025, covering all 6 clusters, research infrastructures, European innovation ecosystems, the 5 EU Missions and the New European Bauhaus facility. The feedback is being collected at the level of the ‘Destinations’ or Missions. To structure the input, the Commission services have provided an orientation document for each Destination and Mission, outlining the impacts and outcomes expected from the actions to be funded in 2025. ✅ Expected impacts are the wider long-term effects of groups of projects on society, the economy and science. The expected impacts are defined in the Horizon Europe strategic plan 2025-2027 ✅ Expected outcomes explain what a group of successful projects should achieve overall in the medium term, and on the way to the longer-term Submit your feedback between April 15 and May 6, 2024! 🔗 Find more information and the surveys here: https://lnkd.in/drpns4pv . . . #innovation #research #sme #horizoneu #growth #technology #funding #canada #europe #international #science

Commenting on research funding in Ireland Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said “Many Irish universities rank among the 500 best universities worldwide. This makes Ireland one of our strongest innovators in the EU, our innovation score board ranks you 16% higher than the EU average. As we look towards the future we should learn from the success, especially when we consider the challenges that still exist. If we look for instance at Ireland’s research intensity, this is the percentage of investment on research and innovation from GDP, we see it is 1% and as it is, it remains much, much lower than the EU 3% target for 2030.” 🔗 Click below to watch Iliana Ivanova’s full speech from our Future of Ireland ‘New Horizons for Research & Innovation’ event yesterday. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejcp63ZY Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science DCU Research UCD Research UL Research Trinity College Dublin University of Galway Technological University Dublin Maynooth University UCC Research Science Foundation Ireland
