Thrilled to have been part of the engaging panel at this year’s Techne Summit in Alexandria, discussing the transformative role of Insurtech in the healthcare industry.
It was an honor to share the stage with industry experts Mohamed Elshabrawy and Ihab El Sokary. Together, we explored how Insurtech is not only reshaping the insurance landscape but also playing a critical role in improving access to affordable healthcare. At Amenli, we’re committed to driving this change forward, and I’m excited to see the impact our efforts will continue to have across Egypt and the wider region.
Thank you to the organizers for a fantastic event!

Somali Insurance Market Penetration Rates
Although insurance penetration remains relatively low across East Africa, compared to global standards It's interesting to know that insurance coverage in Kenya is currently less than 3%. While Insurance penetration in other countries like Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda around 1%. This highlights a significant gap in financial protection for individuals and businesses across the country. Despite advancements in technology and financial services many Kenyans remain uninsured according to Financial Sector Development FSD Africa.
Many East Africans still lack awareness of the benefits of insurance or mistrust insurers due to previous negative experiences with claims settlement. This presents a significant barrier to insurance penetration, particularly in rural areas.
Even though the absence of reliable and significant figures indicating the Somalia's insurance penetration rate it’s generally considered to be one of the lowest in Africa. Despite the fact that all active insurance service providers are Takaful companies and offering sharia compliant products that aligns with the community religious beliefs still there is a cultural acceptance barrier which contribute to low Somali insurance penetration compared to neighboring East Africa countries.
In addition, serious competition forms the traditional and tribe-based community insurance practices within Somali community which creates a serious market competition for formal Insurance service providers considered one of the main factors of the low penetration rate and small premium based market.
Despite these two important factors which contributing to the low insurance penetration rates, there has been growing awareness of the insurance coverage among the Somali people in recent years, this increasing awareness is driven by the growing presence of active insurance service providers in the market recently.
Although addressing the challenges of low insurance penetration is crucial, there are substantial opportunities for growth in the Somali insurance market as the insurance industry continues to expand due to the raise of public understanding of the importance of Insurance coverage among the society.
Finally, to improve Somalia insurance market penetration there is long journey ahead for both active insurance service providers and regulatory bodies as collaborative efforts are essential to address existing market barriers to fully realize the potential of the Somali insurance sector.
The future of insurance is being reshaped by digital innovation.
In his article, Ankit Kamra shares insights on the transformative impact of InsurTech startups and the challenges they face in creating value for SMEs. With the global InsurTech market projected to grow at a CAGR of 35% from 2024 to 2030, the need for innovative solutions has never been greater!
