Hold company social events. Show your employees you appreciate them by throwing events that boost camaraderie and teamwork. For example, buy lunch for your employees, and give them a chance to enjoy a stress-free meal and socialize with co-workers. Holidays and birthdays could prompt bigger celebrations. Aside from in-office gatherings, consider organizing off-site team-building events. Take your employees to a restaurant, go bowling, or organize a happy hour. Adding fun events to the workweek can help employees feel refreshed and refocused when they return to work.

The idea of “forced fun” at different Offices is nothing new. Happy hours, work parties, escape rooms, etc. Wanting your employees to be happy, and collaborative, at work is great. But forcing them to participate in activities is counterproductive. And it becomes even more problematic when: - These activities are used as a bandaid to boost morale - Employees feel obligated to attend and participate - People are chastised for not participating You know what one would’ve liked even more than a corporate happy hour? Better pay, recognition for hard work, and work-life harmony. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to create an inclusive environment. It’s also our responsibility to empower our teams to show up in a way that makes sense for them. There’s nothing wrong with seeing work as what you do from 9-5. Being a team player shouldn’t be defined by whether or not we show up for a few drinks.

It's been a few weeks since National Employee Appreciation Day. I enjoyed seeing what companies across the industry did to show their employees they care, and it got me thinking. In what ways do companies show they care throughout the year? For me, it’s simple: 1. If someone is running late, the first question is always "Is everything alright?". 2. Appreciation and recognition are given without hesitation, even before it's considered going "above and beyond". 3. We genuinely ask each other how our weekends were and truly want to know. 4. We're encouraged to personalize our office spaces and make them our own. 5. When someone is having a bad day, we always find time to grab a coffee together, go out for lunch, or bring a treat to the office. Honestly, my list could go on and on. Take a moment to reflect on your current employer; I hope you can say the same about them.
