Worth watching documentary of ARTE about the detrimental effects of privatisation on long term care in Europe. The documentary mentioned my opinion for EESC Workers' Group on the right of live- in care workers. There is also my short contribution to the documentary about the global care chain of migration in the sector. https://lnkd.in/ezyCiJC5

Spent the last two days at ‘Where Connection creates change’, the annual performing arts forum https://lnkd.in/gdZwXT4X (previously The Theatre Forum). There are many issues around spaces to create that are unique to this sector. By space I mean head space, artistic space, time space, safe spaces, affordable spaces….the list goes on. In tandem with this, there are the wider issues of housing, regular wages, and international events that impact all business and social sectors. The space to speak is most important, and perhaps the performing arts in each country, are a good measure of the level of any subtle erosions of spaces to speak and express ourselves. Local and European Elections are coming up, whatever your experience, opinion or other, make sure you use your vote to express yourself. #sligogathering @Performing Arts Forum

Should the Arts Sector be a delivery agent for the new government's 5 Missions (see below)? That appears to be what Arts Council England is positioning the sector as. I believe such a strategy involves big risks: An "Instrumentalist" approach (where art only exists to serve a (political) purpose) risks replacing the principle of arms-length funding with vassal funding. Were that to happen, artists become delivery agents of the state, and audiences become whomsoever the government wants them to be. At this transformative moment in UK history, doesn't the sector more than ever need strong voices advocating for artistic freedom, and for excellence being the driver of new audiences? * The 5 missions are: Kickstart economic growth, Make Britain a clean energy superpower, Reduce violent crime, Reform childcare & education, and Fix the NHS.

#Series and #telenovelas can shape our understanding of the past - on a national and international level. How do we investigate this topic? Find out in our new video “The impact of telenovelas & series on our memories - the Colombian Palace of Justice”, where we show you our research methods. Using a concrete historical example, such as the Palace of Justice siege and its counterattack on 6 and 7 November 1985 in Bogotá, Colombia and the representations in series such as #Narcos (Netflix, 2015-2017), #PabloEscobarElPatróndelMal” (Caracoltv, 2012) and #ElGeneralNaranajo (#FoxTelecolombia 2019-2020), the video shows how we approach the research question and what role the individual narratives play in this. More information on this research will soon be available in the book ‘Latin America's Contested Pasts in Telenovelas. History as Fuel for Entertainment", which will be published by #DeGruyter. Stay tuned! The video also features excerpts from the event of knowledge transfer ‘Media and political education: a dialogue between Colombia and Germany. The Palace of Justice siege and its counterattack’, an activity we organized together with the #InstitutoCAPAZ and the #JustusLiebigUniversität in the #DeutscheKinemathek. Did you know, that the video is part of the transfer and research activities in the sense of science communication, so that knowledge not only remains in a scientific article, but is also communicated and disseminated in other ways? Subtitles available in English, German and Spanish. https://lnkd.in/eHZgANKU

Since the confinement imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19, the Irish population seems to have turned in on itself or, at the very least, no longer frequent the cultural places it used to. This has been observed by the cultural players I've met, particularly in the world of art galleries, which don't get the same media coverage as music or literature. Nevertheless, everyone is trying to reactivate cultural life, following the example of the CAGA - Contemporary Art Galleries Association - whose role is to exhibit and promote their artists to the widest possible audience. And for the second year running, the CAGA is staging a major event in its galleries this November, inviting Dubliners to openings, exhibitions, workshops, documentary screenings and discussions with the artists over the course of 3 days - a veritable artistic marathon. One of the declared aims of this event is to bring back regular visitors, but also to introduce the galleries and contemporary art to non-experts of all ages - creative workshops have been organised in the galleries for children - and to show that the galleries are open to all, and that it is possible to walk through the doors to acquire a work as much as for the sheer pleasure of discovering them and the artists. Meeting the artist, having a direct relationship with the work, is an important and irreplaceable experience that demystifies a place and a practice that are no longer reserved for an elite. The act of buying a work is a non-compulsory step that depends on the intimate relationship we have with art in general and with the work and the artist in particular. This is what CAGA is trying to achieve by opening wide the doors of contemporary art galleries. I'm leaving on a jet plane .......................... don't know when I'll be back again. Leaving the NHS for 10 days to work in Singapore. Great to be with colleagues from Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) launching the Intercontinental Alliance for Integrated Care a new global learning network looking at Ageing and Integration. I'll also be attending the second Asia Pacific Social Prescribing Conferance with colleagues from SingHealth . I've been reflecting on the current state of the NHS and colleagues who may be leaving. Many GPs of my age are leaving the NHS and like the song they are torn to be leaving the NHS but life outside is more attractive. GP Retention is an urgent issue as highlighted by the Royal College of General Practitioners with the current workforce plan for General Practice looking bleak over coming years. This editorial in the BMJ refers to a paper linking retention of acute staff doctors and nurses to mortality but also recognises the importance of continuity in General Practice and retaining the workforce. https://lnkd.in/e2-hJfti We need some urgent action to recruit new GPs and to retain others. Improved working conditions flexiblity in hours and specific programmes are needed urgently as part of the solutions to fix the NHS. In order to deliver the 3 government shifts we need GPs to stay and not to shift ! So I shall be back again returning to the NHS in 10 days time but how can we keep more GPs in the NHS. What are your solutions?

In recent days, many of us have questioned our travel plans and events, checked in with colleagues and friends, and second-guessed where we go and what we do—all while trying to avoid violence and verbal abuse. The mental load is considerable. Even when the initial burst of protests and demonstrations subsides, we continue to worry about the coming months. We ask ourselves: Which events require late-night travel? Which take us to isolated places or recent 'hotspots' of unrest? This mental load is something that people of Black and Asian backgrounds face every day, both in their personal and professional lives. These calculations are not new to us—they are part of our daily reality. I hope that the occasional spotlight on these issues doesn't fade with the next news cycle. We must strive to build a society where people of all backgrounds, religions, and colors can live and work in safety and harmony. Archana Shastri Pravinder Singh
Milap’s thoughts and solidarity are with people of all religious and ethnic communities, as racially motivated acts of violence are taking place across the UK. It was really heartening to see the anti-fascist and anti-racist demonstrations taking place yesterday, and we hope that people can unite to remember what unites us, rather than what divides us. Hatred has no place in our society, and we are extremely concerned about the aggression unfolding on our streets. We send our love to everyone affected.
