“How much do I need to pay for an Account Director?” A valid question I was asked last week by a good client of mine. We know each other well, so here is a rough breakdown of our tongue in cheek conversation that followed. Adam: Well, I guess it depends on what you want them to do… Client: Oh, sure. Well, I want them to… (lists off x20 or so things). Adam: Hmm. Let me think… Probably around 250k USD should do it. Client: What? Are you taking the piss?! Adam. Nope! Based on everything you have described you want to build a small team to deliver against a HUGE project over a number of years. It’s demanding, will incur long hours and straddle a range of verticals and service offerings. This isn’t a 1x person job mate! Client. Oh FFS. I thought 50k USD would do it. Adam: Of course you did… (sigh). So, what’s the moral here? If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Don’t expect a champagne service when you have beer money… You get my drift. Great results require great people. You can’t lump a HUGE workload on one person and not expect them to break, struggle and eventually fail. It’s not fair on them, your clients, or you. Plan accordingly, and budget fairly. Set realistic goals and targets. Do this, and you should do well. Agree? #service #expectations #monkeys MCG Talent

How I got my manager to develop me Without even asking him I could feel my manager's eyes burning a hole in me. I wasn't even looking at him but I knew it. Disdain, annoyed, burdened. I felt like a liability. I wanted to get on his good side but didn't know how. It seemed like no matter what I tried, it flopped. I wanted to show I was capable & reliable. I wanted to prove that I belonged. And if I'm being honest here, I wanted to be valuable. I had to solve this for my career's sake. I needed to get that growth and development. I’ve had this conversation with many clients over the years… They think of success as ‘that happy relationship’ or a high salary. We have been brought up in a world where the cultural norms mean that ‘to be enough’ you must strive for ‘stuff’. Leaders are driven by many things, one of the most important being victory. Victory, in the law firm context, is often translated into “client satisfaction,” i.e., getting the result the client wants. Many partners are driven by client satisfaction and everything they do is geared towards this. That’s part of the reason why many lawyers feel like they always need to be available for their clients and anytime a client asks for something, they want it done immediately. Many feel that if they’re not making the client happy, they’re not winning. This mentality becomes internalized and making sure clients are satisfied becomes personal. If you’re charging clients $1500+ per hour, the client expects complete satisfaction, and partners seek to deliver. So any failure becomes internalized as a personal shortcoming and can dramatically impact their business. As an associate, failing to understand this dynamic will jeopardize your career. You may see the late nights, short deadlines, and weekend work as unreasonable or toxic but to many partners, it is a necessary effort in pursuit of “victory.” At least that’s their vision of what “victory” looks like. But not all partners play the game the same way. Some partners have different visions of victory and set the terms for “client satisfaction” in different ways, just like different coaches call different plays on a football field despite having the same goal: to win the game. If your leaders’ vision doesn’t align with your philosophy and “style of play,” perhaps it’s time for you to look into joining another team. It wasn’t his wife’s trumpety snores that kept newly self employed Connor Zultant awake last night (although by gosh they were loud, they nearly shook the bed.) After 20 years in corporate, Connor, sick of being overlooked for promotions, had broken free from the salary shackles & set himself up as a consultant 2 months ago. He had an extensive network, knew everyone in the industry and was confident he’d get work easy. I mean, how hard can it be, right? Things were looking up. After weeks of coffees, beers and calls he was getting somewhere. Last week his meeting with John went really well, great banter and, he’d asked proposal from Connor. Nice one. But now Connor is stuck. In all the banter, Connor is actually a bit confused about what John wants. And there’s a bigger problem at play. You see, Connor was never part of the business development team at his job, he’s never had to put a proposal together and he’s never had to find his own clients. He’s been procrastinating over the proposal for the past 5 days & it needs to be submitted in 72 hours! Have you ever been in this position? What’s your advice to Connor? A- Go back to John and ask some direct questions then google how to put together a proposal B- Be honest, Tell John he doesn’t know how to write a proposal C- Something else? PS. Being your own boss isn't easy! One of my biggest challenges is accountability. When I was an employee all of my standards were laid out in front of me: * I was told what time to arrive and leave. * I was told exactly what duties came with my title. * If I struggled with something I could go to my boss and get help! As a entrepreneur: * I choose my schedule. Though this can be a big advantage, it isn't always a good thing. Sometimes, I put things off too long and struggle to play "catch up". * I had NO clue how many job titles I'd take on! 😭 (Head of HR, trainer, office manager, salesman, manufacturer, delivery driver...etc) * There's no one to run to! No manager to pass problems along to. No one to make the hard calls for me in a tough situation. No one to give me performance reviews. Again, being your own boss isn't easy! I also wouldn't change a thing about this journey! 😉

Could specialization be the key to unlocking our full potential? I'd like to share a conversation that really made me think. I had a chat, with an accountant who shared his journey to success by focusing on a niche. Initially he managed accounts for hotels. Soon realized the potential in helping the restaurant industry. While many accountants tried to serve a client base he saw the value in specializing. Although it may seem unconventional the outcomes are quite impressive. It's evident that accountants who concentrate on clientele tend to experience growth compared to those with a general focus. While he does handle estate and flower shop accounts occasionally his primary focus is on restaurants. Its proving to be highly successful! This got me thinking. In our pursuit of catering to everyone are we missing out on the chance to excel for someone? Perhaps honing in on a niche could be the ingredient for achieving success. What are your thoughts on this approach?
