Anyone know if SHRM are hiring for their PR team right now? I have a feeling they’ll need it 😂… Removing “Equity” from their DEI strategy is indeed a bold, and frankly flammable move, and people clearly aren’t happy. Here’s what we’ve gotta do about it: 1️⃣ Employers- Stop ‘requiring’ this when hiring. You don’t need it. And if you want a reframe on this if you’re asking for a SHRM practioner in your job ads you are now effectively saying you align to anti-equity principles - really want that?! 2️⃣ HR folks- stop fuelling the fire. The more you invest, subscribe, attend conferences… the more you validate and enable that behaviour. I know this is hard given 1️⃣… but make a stand where you can 3️⃣ Let’s build better- We have the same issue here in the UK with CIPD. Both stand as the only real ‘recognition’ you can earn for HR… but ask yourself, if you didnt need this to jump through job application hoops, would you want this? My guess is no. Support other orgs. Invest elsewhere. Whether thats time or money, help create that shift! 🔥 There are SO many progressive networks, communities, courses, and programmes you can invest in that will accelerate your journey, instead of taking you back to the stone age. 🤘 We’re building our own here: https://lnkd.in/e5yhxFNV But two more you should also check out and follow: 👉 Luke O'Mahoney 👉 PeakHR 👉 Learngility It’s fine to be mad at SHRM, but now you need to stop subscribing to, validating and aligning to their principles…❌ Open Org
Totally with you. You could probably do all of the workshops, join all of the communities and sign up to all the programmes you’ve mentioned and it would cost you less than doing the CiPD. + you’d get 10x value from them.
Regardless of where people stand on this latest SHRM debacle, It's definitely time for a shift! It's completely unnecessary to require SHRM or CIPD and as you call out, there are so many amazing alternatives popping up (thanks for listing me 🙏🏻) which offer alternative ways of thinking, working and learning in "HR" - however we come to recelaim and define the profession into the future.
Nuts! So just because it’s difficult to implement, we’ll just scrap it?! But it does remind me when SRI became RI (Responsible Investing) dropping S for Social 🤣
👏👏Adam Horne - Another standing (sitting?) ovation for my favorite Open Oracle! Lemme know when you get tired of me singing your praises, k? 😎
As someone who recently got their SHRM-SCP designation, I am disappointed in SHRM and completely disagree with this change. The challenge I have is that while I make up for it in experience, I don’t have post-secondary education which I believe has been one of the things holding me back from finding my next opportunity and so, I opted to obtain this designation in hopes that it might demonstrate my capabilities in the people space (clearly not going that way for me given the SHRM recent events 😩😂). It would be great if companies looked beyond education in all aspects and focused on experience as I have seen some arguments that SHRM is inequitable in the first place re: barrier to entry, and they aren’t wrong, but the time and resources required for post-secondary are even larger barriers, at least for myself. All that said, as it stands, I certainly wouldn’t intend to renew based on what they’ve recently demonstrated.
Just seeing this, could not agree more ❗
Love our friends from across the pond ⛰️❤️

5moHere’s the kicker: I’m sure their PR team and Legal team already know about this but they took the gamble anyway. The question is: how many People leaders will keep funneling hard-earned money into that enterprise that has been anti-equity for years. This is nothing new. Look at their pass rates; why would anyone be surprised? Their BOK and exams is not incredibly accessible nor has it ever been. The cost of a conference, the nickel and diming access to information, their Chief cohorts, all of this was gatekeeping and pay to play, at best. When people (and orgs) show you who they are, believe them. Masks are off; great, it’s about time. My question is how many people will continue to pay to play despite this “uproar.”
