The event aims to highlight the historical contributions of the nine Black sororities and fraternities, past and present, and explore their impact within the firm and communities. In July 2023, JPMorgan Chase, in collaboration with ABP, initiated a pioneering cross-LOB strategic partnership. This partnership focuses on diversifying talent in the financial services sector and providing resources to help over two million members from the nine organizations establish strong economic foundations for themselves and their families. #BlackMenLead: Sekou Kaalund calls himself an “accidental banker.” At age five, the former head of Chase Consumer Bank for the Northeast Division told his parents he planned to run for U.S. Senate so he could create laws to help communities in need. “From a young age, my whole anchoring was on how can I be of service and drive impact,” says Kaalund, head of branch and small business banking at U.S. Bank. Banking wasn’t even on Kaalund’s radar until he won an award sponsored by the Executive Leadership Council while attending Duke University that offered the opportunity to learn from Black leaders at top companies across the U.S. “I realized that I could have a greater impact by influencing capital flows and leading people,” Kaalund says, which caused him to pivot his career aspirations. In a career that’s taken him from the New York Federal Reserve to fifteen years at JPMorgan Chase, Kaalund has helped to narrow the racial wealth gap by bringing more people from underserved communities – including Black Americans — into the financial system and helping them to achieve greater economic success. As I reflect on my journey, from starting as a Teller with an MBA to becoming a Vice President at Bank of America within 7 years; and my foray into the political space as a Candidate for Maryland State Delegate, I am reminded that every experience is a stepping stone to greater understanding and development. Here are some invaluable lessons I've learned along the way: 1. Not every effort will result in victory, but every attempt is a victory in itself. My campaign for Maryland State Delegate didn't end with a win, but it taught me the power of resilience and the importance of staying true to one's vision. 2. My career path was not a straight line. It was filled with twists, turns, and unexpected opportunities. The key was to remain adaptable and open to new possibilities. 3. Whether in the corporate world or in public service, leadership is about serving others. It's about making a positive impact and lifting others as we climb. 4. My transition from a Teller to a Vice President was fueled by persistence. It's about showing up, doing the work, and not being afraid to take on new challenges. 5. As I look back, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible show of solidarity during my campaign period. Families, friends, volunteers, supporters, and local leaders came together, they showed out, not just in numbers, but in passion and dedication. So, whether you are taking your first step or your thousandth, know that every experience shapes you into the leader you are meant to be.

I had the privilege of addressing over 150 ambitious Black students and recent graduates at Barclays' "Young, Black and in Finance" event. The energy in the room was electric, filled with potential ready to be unleashed on the finance world. As I shared my journey from a council estate to a thriving career in finance, I saw eyes light up with recognition and hope. My message was clear: your background isn't a barrier—it's your unique edge in this industry. To the future finance leaders I met: 1. Your perspective is invaluable. The challenges you've faced have equipped you with resilience and insight that this industry needs. 2. Embrace discomfort. You might often be the only one from your community in the room. Use that position to drive change. 3. Your 'superpower' lies in your differences. My immigrant background and early struggles shaped my approach to finance in ways that became my greatest strengths. 4. Focus on what you have: work ethic, likability, curiosity, and drive. These qualities will set you apart more than any privilege ever could. 5. Don't wait for opportunities—create them through relentless effort and dedication. To Barclays and Nana Agyemang : Thank you for creating this crucial platform. Your commitment to diversity is shaping the future of finance. How does a business leader such as Jamie Dimon (Chairman & CEO, JPMorgan Chase & Co..), approach #diversity as part of his strategy? This #WeekendRead post features his interview with Ruth Umoh in Fortune, where he shares his views on how one should think strategically in order to make sure their enterprise does not miss on key talent due to bias, and truly leverage the benefits of diverse perspectives. Here is a set of key actions they follow to ensure that their DEI initiatives are effective and not just performative: - Adopting a professional and an intentional approach, they treat their DEI initiatives like any other line of business to focus on numbers and performance. - All minority groups are not fused together. Progress of each group across company hierarchy is tracked separately for a realistic picture. - The bank tracks the movement of all employees up and through the company with a focus on its hiring and retention practices to measure how well the bank’s DEI initiatives are functioning. - Increase their outreach to a higher number of HBCUs for recruitment.
