Human-Wildlife Conflict: Unlike other large cats and pack predators, cheetahs do not do well in wildlife reserves. These areas normally contain high densities of other larger predators like the lion, leopard, and hyena. Predators such as these, compete with cheetahs for prey and will even kill cheetahs given the opportunity. In such areas, the cheetah cub mortality can be as high as 90%. Therefore, roughly 90% of cheetahs in Africa live outside of protected lands on private farmlands and thus often come into conflict with people. When a predator threatens a farmer’s livestock, they also threaten the farmer’s livelihood. Farmers act quickly to protect their resources, often trapping or shooting the cheetah. Because cheetahs hunt more during the day, they are seen more often than the nocturnal predators which contributes to a higher rate of persecution on the cheetah.

🐻 In Alberta, Grizzlies and Humans Clash 🐻 In rugged Alberta, a growing conflict between humans and grizzly bears has sparked a controversial solution. Since 2005, these threatened but potentially dangerous animals have caused 8 deaths and 62 maulings, not to mention over 100 livestock attacks annually. Now, two decades after banning grizzly hunting, Alberta is considering enlisting hunters as stand-in wildlife managers. Supporters argue it’s a win-win, addressing a critical public safety issue while providing hunters with new recreational opportunities. However, the Wildlife Society’s Alberta Chapter is challenging these new provincial regulations. They suggest that population estimates are outdated, hunting is often ineffective in instances of human-bear conflict, and problem-bear management should not be placed in citizens’ hands. The UNODC World #Wildlife #Crime Report 2024 is out. The global scope and scale of wildlife crime remain substantial with seizures during 2015–2021 indicating an #illegal #trade in 162 countries and territories affecting around 4,000 plant and animal species. Beyond the immediate #conservation threat to target species, population reductions caused by wildlife #trafficking can play a role in triggering ecosystem-level impacts by disturbing interdependencies between different species and undermining related functions and processes, including those important to #climatechange resilience and mitigation.

📌 Another reason why RBS should be secured, locked and temper resistant. ** Secondary poisoning from rodent bait stations occurs when a predator or scavenger consumes a rodent that has ingested rodenticide, leading to the unintentional poisoning of the non-target animal. This is a significant environmental as well as wildlife concern, particularly with anticoagulant rodenticides, which work by thinning the blood and can accumulate in the rodent's body over time & can kill or harm non target animals. ** By carefully managing rodent bait stations and using appropriate products and methods, the risk of secondary poisoning can be minimized. #pestcontrol #UAE #Agricultureengineer #IPM

Our threatened species need all the help they can get. Predation, competition and the spread of disease by feral cats and foxes are key threats to over 200 threatened native animal species. These introduced predators have also played a big role in the loss of 32 of the 46 mammal, bird and reptile extinctions since 1788. More help is on the way: launching tomorrow, our new website will help centralise information on the tools and knowledge to help manage feral cat and fox populations more effectively and humanely. 🦊🐱 Together, we can make a difference for Australia’s wildlife. #FeralCatControl #FoxControl #Conservation

HUMAN WILDLIFE CONFLICT I talked about this video previously but noticed I didn’t post it This is a major issue in Nigeria and we hope that more will be done to curb the menace of human wildlife conflicts in Nigeria Also, there are certain terms that cannot be used to refer to animals - animals are moved by instincts and not necessarily intention (if it makes any sense) #wildlife #conflicts #animals #nature #humanwildlifeconflicts

As fast as they are beautiful, cheetah are incredible animals. With a population as few as a thousand across Kenya and Tanzania, their numbers are dwindling. To see one on safari is a real treat. One of the biggest threats they face is diminishing habitat. They require broader hunting areas than other predators typically do, and vast open spaces are under threat. That’s just one of many reasons why we’re working so hard to protect critical habitat areas across Amboseli. Shrinking habitat means they also come into contact with local people, and livestock are often a tempting treat for them. In the 3rd quarter, cheetahs were responsible for 53 depredations in our area of operation, following close behind lions with 89. Our Predator Compensation Fund helps offset these losses to local livestock owners, helping to protect cheetahs and other predators from retaliation attempts.
