If you want to stand out from the crowd, be a great LISTENER! Active listening is about more than just hearing words—it's understanding the deeper needs and concerns that clients may not explicitly express. For instance, in a roadway design project, a client might request wider lanes. Through active listening, we might discover their true concern is pedestrian safety near schools. This insight allows us to propose a solution that addresses both the stated and unstated needs. By listening actively, we deliver designs that truly serve our clients' goals. 7 years ago, when I started my Environmental health program, one of my old lecturers from the beginning, said, "Environment health is a broad spectrum." Of course with acquiring the prominent information, exposure or experience rather and the continuous research, I have come to understand that it is a broad spectrum because, it considers the many ways the environment can affect human health and the many different disciplines that are involved in addressing these issues. The environment as defined in relation to health status is quite broad in scope, encompassing the natural environment , the built environment and consumer products. Human activities have a direct impact on the environment. Both positive and negative Regrettably, the negative impacts of human activities on the environment are numerous and far-reaching. Environmental Impact Assessments play a significant role in the prediction of the environmental and social impacts of the project prior to its development. This information is crucial for decision-makers and stakeholders to make plans accordingly, aiming to enhance the positive impacts and reduce or mitigate the adverse impacts. Engagement of environmental practitioners in projects like these, will help ensure that any undertaking that may impact the environment is thoroughly assessed before implementation. This will guide Structural Engineers to go for sustainable designs, testing and applying technologies that reduce or eliminate the negative outcomes.
We, structural engineers, design structures to satisfy serviceability and ultimate limit states (SLS and ULS). In other words, we design our structures to optimize safety, economy, and serviceability. But what about the environmental impact? Why is it not considered as part of the structural design process? In the attached peer-reviewed article, we propose a new direction of thinking by formulating an Environmental Impact Limit State (EILS) to be checked by structural engineers along with SLS and ULS at the design stage of structural elements. We demonstrate the application of EILS in the design of a concrete building following NBCC and CSA A23.3. EILS can be readily used by engineers in the design process—it is not a proposed code change, but rather an adaptation of the code design process to consider environmental impact. We are working on expanding the concept for other applications, including bridges and infrastructure. The article is published in the Journal of Building Engineering as an open-access article to increase feasibility and application by engineers. We thank Dalhousie University for covering the fees for the open-access option. https://lnkd.in/epFWkZxS

For young Structural Engineers, "Conservative Assumptions" are used when you encounter several uncertainties in your design, including latent condition. I have attached pointers that can be used to ensure safety in structural design.

📢 Professional Fees VS Construction Costs 📢📢Whilst in #London last week I met up with many #structuralengineers who expressed frustration at how many developers seem content to accept inferior structures rather than pay higher #fees for a more economical one.💰💰 🏗🏗A more #economical one would involve more sophisticated #engineeringanalysis such as non linear analysis, plastic hinge calculations, a decent FE analysis, continuity and so on. It would also involve the use of better paid engineers in an office as not all would be equally capable. Part of the problem lies with us engineers perhaps as we must improve our #outreach and #communicationskills with clients. I have personally encountered clients who willingly add reinforcement without my instructions and then do their best to underpay me.🤷 #valueengineering #structures #economics #engineer
