This piece from The Chronicle was so good and gave me two books to read for the paper I'm working on! The narrative that gets reinforced all over the place that college is primarily about employability and that the primary outcome should be credentialing (having a degree so as to be employable) can lead to a bleak reality: those students want to do only what they must to get the paper that will fulfill the economic promise higher education has made to them. Critical thinking, identity formation, and self-authorship need not apply. In academic advising specifically, I think about what we are doing (or are not doing) to promote exploration, meaning-making, and the capacity to be affected (perhaps even transformed) by higher education. How can those come through in an environment many now face of "retention at all costs"? If you'd like to hear me muse about this some more and are attending NACADA Annual next month, join me at my paper session!

Case Studies: Improvements to University Assessment Process over Time New England Educational Assessment Network (NEean) Announces its Winter Webinar 15 Jan. 2025 As assessment professionals come together for NECHE’s annual meeting, the New England Educational Assessment Network wanted to highlight our upcoming webinar in January. It will be a great opportunity to network with the various communities of practice that are nurtured by our organization. The focus of this webinar is on the crucial question: Do you want to engage faculty and leadership in the assessment process and in conversations about data? This presentation will share a case study of an institution of about 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students and their effort to centralize an assessment process from across its seven distinct (siloed) colleges and schools over a seven-year period. Discussion will include the strategy that the university is taking to create a culture of trust related to assessment and to make changes to the assessment process based on data collected, analyzed and discussed. Presenters: Jim Shattuck, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs Kathleen Neal, Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness Donna Menhart, Associate Dean for Academic Innovation; Professor of Ear Training Natalia Zagula, Assistant Director of Assessment All from the University of Hartford Cost: This event is FREE for NEean members, and costs $15 for non-members. An email will be sent on Jan. 14 to registrants with login information for the webinar. Notification of Session Recording Please be advised that this session will be recorded and the recording shared with attendees and NEean members. https://lnkd.in/eESgYCQG

NACADA colleagues, I will be participating in a panel on The New Era of Graduate Advising on Tuesday, May 14th, 2:00PM ET. With Yuan Chen, University of Missouri–St. Louis and Ruby Barnett, University of California-Santa Cruz, we will take a look at where graduate advising has been heading in the last five years and where it may head in the next five. With uneven, reduced, and eliminated institutional support, an uncertain legal environment, and a rapidly evolving academic landscape (putting it mildly), graduate advising needs a opportunity to reset. Our students' expectations have changed. Our students have changed, too! What does it mean for practitioners? Can we solve all the problems in an hour! Probably not, but it will be fun to try. If you are like me, you spend a lot of your time thinking about how to create high impact advising opportunities with minimal resources. You may also spend more time managing expectations and emergencies than engaging in academic advising. Too often, the job becomes about convincing people (administrators, students, faculty) that graduate advising is necessary, rather than advising graduates. This session is only open to NACADA members, but if you cannot make it or just want to chat about graduate advising, reach out to me and we can book a virtual coffee break.
