🗣 New Project to Address Port Infrastructure The unfortunate collapse of Baltimore's Key Bridge highlights the need for enhancements in our Nation's infrastructure. Today one of my teams announced a new audit of the Maritime Administration's (MARAD) risk management and oversight of the Port Infrastructure Development Program’s IIJA-Funded Grants. Key Points: 📢 MARAD is responsible for improving the U.S. marine transportation system to meet the Nation’s economic, environmental, and security needs. 📢 MARAD administers and oversees the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), which provides discretionary grants on a competitive basis to projects intended to improve the safety, efficiency, or reliability of the movement of goods into, out of, around, or within a port. 📢 In 2021, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) provided the PIDP $450 million for each of the 5 fiscal years beginning in fiscal year 2022—a large increase over the $245 million per year the program received in fiscal years 2019 through 2022. Experience from major #TransportProjects shows that much of our #numerical assessment work is highly repetitive. It’s also common for projects to burn through large portions of the budget redoing assessments due to inconsistencies in input parameters across different packages or human errors. Most importantly, the time, #computational power, and workforce needed for these assessments present a major challenge in large-scale projects, where tight deadlines are a constant pressure. “Bridging the East and West: A Strategic Analysis of the A66 Corridor Dualling Proposal” The A66 road is a major east-west route in northern England, spanning approximately 80 kilometres. It connects the M6 motorway at Penrith in Cumbria to the A1(M) at Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire. The road is crucial for both local and long-distance traffic, facilitating movement between the east and west coasts of northern England.
