Have you been struggling to hire Accounting professionals? This article shares why there is a struggle filling those roles. I have been placing accounting professionals for 12 years, and the struggle is REAL! If your company has not increased salaries significantly over the last 3 years, you are missing out on talent. If I was great at math, and younger, I'd consider going in to accounting. Can you say job security? Salaries are going to have to increase significantly, this is a critical function of a business. #accountingjobs #accountants

"When is the best time to jump from public into industry accounting?" 💡 A sharp, Big 4, up-and-comer posed this strategic question during our networking call as we discussed her long-term career goals. I was impressed by her foresight because setting career goals, leveraging your experience/skills, and knowing when to make a logical move, are worthwhile topics for any professional to consider! This isn’t the first time this question has been asked, so I wanted to share my knowledge with others. From our experience in working with clients' criteria and salary ranges, there are generally two "sweet spots" for exiting public accounting to accelerate your career growth. ⭐ Year 3 OR after one full year as a Senior. ⭐ This level of experience will make you most competitive for Senior positions and will likely not require you to take a pay cut/decrease in title. The expected base salary is $105-115K for public companies (SEC and Technical roles) or $90-100K for general Controllership positions. Bonus points if you have a CPA! ⭐ Year 5 OR after making Manager title ⭐ The expected salary for this individual is $135-145K base (again, SEC and Technical roles), which is what one can expect for making a lateral switch. If you wait to make a switch until Sr. Manager/Director and have public clients, your most qualified/highest-paid next role is SEC Reporting or Technical Accounting. If a company is going through a large transformation and doesn’t have the bench strength for an internal promotion, you may be able to jump directly into an Assistant Controller role; however, achieving a Corporate Controller role is more likely after gaining industry experience. There’s a stigma around bouncing from job to job; however, with support and strategy, your career moves can open doors and help you gain the experience needed to achieve long-term success. For other roles/levels, see our 2025 salary guide below! I hope you find this a helpful tool if you are curious about current Chicago market salary expectations. ⭐ Please reach out if you would like support for your next career move.
