Proud to collaborate with UEFA on advancing accessibility in football #UEFAAccessibilityGuidelines Accessibility in European football is about more than just infrastructure for disabled people; it touches on the needs of over 40% of all people, making football truly inclusive for staff, volunteers, and fans. The recent UEFA Champions League match at Club Atlético de Madrid demonstrated how accessible design can benefit everyone, showcasing the inclusive facilities and initiatives featured in UEFA’s Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines not only support matchday experiences but also emphasize creating welcoming spaces for non-matchday activities, fostering a strong sense of community. There are over 120 million disabled people in the European Union, and with the increasing interest in football, we have a huge opportunity to set a global standard for accessibility. Equal access ensures that everyone can participate and enjoy the game on equal terms. Explore the guidelines and learn more about making football more inclusive on the #UEFA and #AccessibAll websites. Together, we can make football truly welcoming for all. If you work for an organisation that engages young people in sport, you WILL be working with young carers, and it is so important to be aware of the barriers they may face when accessing community sport. Young carers are often a forgotten demographic of underserved young people: they are independent, they are excellent leaders, they have immeasurable responsibilities for their loved ones, but all of these qualities mean that they are often quiet. We often don't about the barriers young carers face in childhood until they're in their adulthood, with the gift of hindsight: by then, it's too late. Did you know: ⭐ There are an estimated 1 million young carers under the age of 18 in the UK. (Carers Trust, 2024) ⭐ Despite this well informed estimation, only ~54,000 were identified by schools in June 2024. (Carers Trust, 2024) ⭐ On paper, children become 'young carers' at the age of 5 years, however many children under 5 are taking part in care-giving tasks at home. (Barnardo's, 2024). Despite 1 in 5 children being young carers in the UK, support for them is highly varied across local authorities, and is influenced by regional and national funding and policies: some have dedicated internal young carer's services, others have to rely of charities and external organisations. There's also, currently, no standardised of consistent training for professionals working with young people. In short, it's a postcode lottery, and young carers have to rely on being born in the right place to be adequately supported. However, community sport, in some shape or form, exists in most corners of the UK - what a fantastic potential resource to reach countless young carers, regardless of their postcode. Join us on December 3rd to learn more about young carers and how you can best support them in your community setting.
Next Tuesday our Inclusive Club Network is hosting it's next webinar, Empowering Young Carers through Community Sport! There are approximately one million young carers in the UK who are providing support for a family member, friend or siblings at home. Despite this number, only 28% of schools in 2024 identified young carers in their pupil communities. Hosted by Sarah Jones, this webinar will explore the unique challenges faced by young carers, their vital roles, and how community sports clubs, coaches, and volunteers can provide them with lifesaving support. On United Nations' International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, Access Sport highlight five ways to improve disabled and disadvantaged young people’s lives through sport: 1. Disabled and disadvantaged children have the right to 60 minutes of physical activity, just like every other child. 2. Inclusive community sport and school sport need equal priority and funding. 3. Investing in club leaders, coaches and volunteers, of today and tomorrow, is critical if we want to make community sport truly inclusive. 4. Sense of belonging and community underpin the wider transformational benefits of sport and need to be prioritised in the way we support and fund the sector. 5. Community sport is complex but this is a strength not a weakness. It's time to embrace and empower the whole sector. #communitysport #disabilitysport #inclusivesport
Help us to unlock the benefits of inclusive community sport for the next generation of young people. To celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we are launching ‘Five Key Changes’ - our Manifesto for Change. This manifesto sets out five ways that we can better support disabled and disadvantaged young people through inclusive community sport. Too many young people remain unable to access the transformational benefits of community sport. This is a serious issue that demands an urgent response from the Government, the sport for development sector and grassroots community sport providers. As we enter an election year, now is the time for action. 🏐 Community Spirit Shines at Annual Volleyball Tournament 🏐 This past weekend, our local community came alive with camaraderie and joy during our annual volleyball tournament. People of all ages gathered to compete, connect, laugh, and most importantly, have fun 🙂 In our fast-paced professional world, events like these remind us of the simple yet profound joy of community. The prize? A humble banana. The real reward? The sense of togetherness and shared smiles that lit up the day. Why This Matters: 1️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Sports bring people together, fostering connections that transcend age, background, and profession. 2️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴: Community sports events boost physical and mental health, providing a much-needed break from daily routines. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: These moments of joy strengthen our community fabric and remind us of the importance of coming together. As professionals, we often focus on metrics and KPIs. But let's not forget the value of community and the simple pleasures of shared experiences. This tournament was a beautiful reminder that sometimes, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆. 🚨 This is a reminder of a serious issue in youth sports: age misrepresentation. Cheating like this happens far too often, but it only makes headlines when it occurs at the highest levels. NSID helps prevent these situations in youth sports. #YouthSports #FairPlay #NSID
