So, you have finally found the product-market fit and laid down the grand vision for your startup. Congratulations! What then becomes the most important task for you as a founder? Hiring. But isn't that the job of the recruiter or the HR person? Well, outsourcing some tasks can be helpful; however, at the early stage, it becomes very important for the founder to be actively involved in the hiring process. Why? Because your company is the by-product of the teams you build. Simple. And let's face it: You care more about the company than anyone else. Of course, you will always have lots of other work to do. But hiring the right people is the highest leverage activity that you perform. After all, all great companies have great people. The hidden cost of a mediocre hire is huge. If you are an early-stage founder, you need to be spending time identifying people, getting potential candidates to want to work at your company, and meeting every person that comes to interview. Been there, done that? We would love to hear your experience with early-stage hiring in the comments. #founders #earlystagehiring #startups #recruitment

The most successful startup companies I have recruited for: a) are self-aware and understand their unique gaps/needs ✅ b) look for the right fit at the right time ✅ c) want to hire great people, but don't fall in love with big brands. ✅ Roles in startups will fundamentally shift over the next 12-24 months. The person that took you from A to B, might not take you to C. And that's OK. And stealing this quote from Ben Horowitz because it's a good one "(Your) position is not the same as the same position at Microsoft or Facebook. Don’t look for the candidate out of central casting. This is not a movie." It's natural to think about how a potential hire might fit as you scale... but that future might look a lot different than you think. Thoughts? #recruitment #techstartups #hiring

I had a great conversation today with a startup founder about the challenges of hiring tech talent. They admitted that the process had taken much longer than expected, and they weren’t entirely sure they were attracting the best candidates for the role. Their plan was to address the issue next year when they would be scaling their engineering team again. I understand that logic—it’s easy to push non-urgent problems down the road. However, trying to fix your hiring process while you’re in the middle of scaling quickly is like trying to "clean your house while the kids are still playing in it" or "brushing your teeth while eating a cookie"! The pressure of urgent hiring needs, will always get in the way of building a better process. If you know you have hiring on the horizon, investing time now to refine your processes during the quieter periods will make everything run more smoothly when it’s time to scale. It is a great investment of time. #StartupLife #TechHiring #TalentAcquisition #ScalingStartups #FounderTips #HiringChallenges #EngineeringTeams #StartupGrowth #RecruitmentStrategy

I've had lots of discussions with early-stage businesses about hiring since the turn of the year. There's a certain person who's more suited to this kind of business as opposed to a more established one. And I'm not saying one's better than the other, they're just different. But understanding the differences and being able to talk about them in real terms is useful for hiring. What's missing from this list of observations about startups? > The autonomy can be either thrilling or terrifying, depends who you ask. > The absence of “this isn’t in my PD” is new to people who’ve never experienced this type of business before. > All startups are an experiment to see whether the company deserves to exist or not - this excites and horrifies the right and wrong people. > The lack of legacy process, policy and “this is how we’ve always done it” is music to some ears and plain old gobbledygook to others. > There’s no time for values misalignment when you’re trying to move quickly and ship things. > Finding the right blend of hiring speed and accuracy is an ever-moving nirvana. #hiring #startup #talent #interview

The key to early-stage startup recruiting success: Connecting Deeply Developing deep connections with founders and early-stage employees is crucial when working with seed-round startups. At this early stage, startups are often selling their company vision and upside to new hires more so than a proven track record or stability. And since cash may be limited, recruiting candidates who are comfortable with equity being a significant part of the compensation package is important. Sometimes that can be a lot easier said than done, and no one is able to do this better than the founder. But founders of startups get busy. So, finding a recruiting partner that really embodies your startup’s vision and mission is highly critical. I really believe the best way to do this is by spending time upfront getting to know each other. I’m a big believer in doing things in person whenever possible. *Sure, I use all the modern tools and video meeting capabilities, but I love getting together for lunch or coffee and doing onsite visits whenever possible – Travel is no problem If you’re a company founder with upcoming hiring needs and you value building relationships as much as I do, please feel free to reach out. #talisconsultinggroup #recruiting #recruiters #headhunting #careers #careergrowth #jobhuting #techcareers #softwaredevelopment #devopsjobs #startupfounder #startupfunding #cybersecurityjobs #seedround
