Today is World Mental Health Day! The National Fair Housing Training Academy (NFHTA) understands that mental health and fair housing are closely linked. Safe, stable, affordable housing is a crucial foundation for mental well-being. Discrimination and housing instability can significantly impact mental health, making the fight for fair housing more important than ever. Let’s ensure everyone has access to housing that promotes mental well-being and recognizes the importance of fair housing in supporting mental wellness. To learn more about how mental health intersects with fair housing, check out a previous NFHTA Digest focusing on self-care: Nurturing Well-being by Elevating Self-Care in the Fair Housing Movement: https://lnkd.in/gx_Dk_Zy Additionally, explore opportunities to participate in the National Mental Health Strategy, including Mental Health First Aid Trainings, to further support mental wellness in our communities: https://lnkd.in/ezuCNhFA

This is what Panel 2 of our conference with TENENET o.z. in Bratislava will explore. The panel will be moderated by Rut Erdelyi, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Expert at World Health Organization. The speakers will provide insight into the main challenges identified in an EASPD study, and will explore possible solutions to overcome them. Join the conversation on 20 and 21 May in Bratislava! Suicide prevention in Nepal has become a significant public health concern in recent years due to rising suicide rates, particularly among youth and vulnerable groups. Several efforts are underway to address this issue, involving the government, Nepal Red Cross, NGOs, and international agencies. Despite efforts, there is still significant stigma around mental health and suicide, which prevents many people from seeking help. Similarly, access to mental health services, especially in rural areas, remains limited due to a shortage of trained providers and facilities. Economic hardship remains a driving force behind mental health struggles and suicides in many parts of Nepal. On this suicide prevention day, together with the Ministry of Health, NRCS and other national and international NGOs have been heavily involved in advocating the “needs of MHPSS services”. We have been implementing different activities like community awareness, media campaigns, school programmes, IEC distribution, social media campaigns, rallies with pla-cards, and delivery of important messages from the health minister and other notable personalities. Hope the message will reach to across the various regions of Nepal. Suicide prevention in Nepal is gaining attention, but challenges remain in ensuring access to services, reducing stigma, and addressing underlying social determinants. Hope this sort of campaign will add value in creating awareness and to improve access to mental health services.

We are witnessing a rise in suicide cases across various countries in the Asia-Pacific region. In some situations, this is due to the impact of crises and emergencies. We want to change the narrative that mental health and psychosocial support is not merely a good-to-have but a life-saving activity. Today, as we all commemorate #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, we would also like to highlight the initiatives of National Societies to support communities in preventing suicide cases and promoting positive mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The Westchester Index, which profiles suicide rates by race and ethnicity, reports that in 2016–2018, the County’s suicide rate among Asian Americans was 6.6 per 100,000, higher than the state average. Expanding access to mental health services for the County’s growing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population must address historical and cultural influences to overcome the stigma that comes with seeking mental health treatment. We are proud to support S.P.E.A.K., which empowers the AAPI community wellbeing through education, advocacy, research, and services. Talking openly about mental health can break down barriers, foster empathy, and build community. When we share our struggles and victories, we show others that they are not alone—and that there is no shame in seeking help. At the Well-U project, we’ve seen how powerful personal stories can be. Refugee children, caregivers, and lay professionals have shared their journeys, helping to reduce the stigma around mental health in communities across Europe. By opening up these conversations, we’re promoting understanding and ensuring that more people feel safe reaching out for support. Together, we can rewrite the narrative and bring mental health into the open. Your story matters.

It's Children's Mental Health Awareness Week! Much of my career and research has focused on youth mental health and suicide prevention. Through this work I’ve analyzed data, spoken with dozens of youth, and collaborated with many partners to foster mental health among youth. This week, I'll be sharing some of what I’ve learned from that work, as well as some articles and resources. First, one of the best resources out there is the Blueprint for Youth Suicide Prevention, co-developed by AAP and AFSP in collaboration with experts from NIMH (aap.org/suicideprevention). Check out this article I co-authored last year about how the Blueprint came together! https://lnkd.in/gkW9_hBQ
