Stay focused and avoid reckless driving and drifting, and follow traffic laws during rainfall. ✅Leave adequate safe distance ✅Do not hit the brakes suddenly ✅Slow down significantly when taking turns to prevent the car from slipping ✅Stay away from canyons and water reservoirs ✅Adhere to prescribed speed limit when the speed reduction system is activated ✅Seafarers and beach-goers are appealed to check the weather condition before going out Stay safe at all times and make sure of the safety of everyone ✅Construction companies much comply with safety and safety standards as instructed below ✅Secure electrical connections indoors Clean internal rain gutters in the house or building ✅Use designated rainwater drains to drain rainwater collections ✅Avoid opening and using sewage drains to drain rain water ✅Fasten outdoor furniture securely and take flying materials inside the house or building ✅Remove tools and equipment from balconies ✅Stay away from trees, unstable boards and construction sites Stay safe and have a great rainy day.!

Cloud seeding, a weather modification technique, is speculated to have contributed to the unprecedented precipitation. WHY DUBAI FLOODS? In the #UAE and in many other countries around the world, #cloudseeding is a weather modification technique used to tackle water challenges. It's also known as man-made precipitation and artificial rain making. The country is a pioneer in the Persian Gulf region for utilising cloud seeding technology to combat water scarcity due to the hot climate. By introducing Hygroscopic particles, it enhances natural rain particles, starting a collision-coalescence process. The recent #flooding in #Dubai was not caused by cloud seeding, according to scientists, but rather by a deluge of rainfalls, the highest in over 75 years (>250mm), while the city is not equipped with adequate drainage for heavy rainfall. Here are some reasons from my experience and observations: 1. Not enough drainage in many areas due to infrequent rainfall leads to flooding, requiring pumping trucks to clear roads. 2. #Drains are often blocked by sand, making them ineffective and difficult to clean on a regular basis. Remember, the entire city was built on sand. 3. The flat terrain and few low hills cause rainwater to stagnate, leading to flooding before draining. The flat terrain makes it challenging to design stormwater drainage systems to convey water back to the sea as there are no rivers. Questions for readers: 1. Is cloud seeding ethical in challenging nature? 2. 16th April 2024 in the past week is recorded as a Day that faced one of the strongest storms in the history of #Dubai and #UAE in the past 75 years. More than 250mm of rainfall within 24 hours! As the world witnessed how the city came to a standstill on tuesday, and the damages that were suffered by individuals and collectives together, it is worthy of mention how quick were the municipality teams to come out with unwavering zeal to help drain the water out. And how the people came in support of each other, be it rescuing people from the cars stuck in deep waters through the subways or be it providing basic food items in communities that were surrounded and blocked by the unexpected floods. AND finally yesterday as posted by #Gulfnews, we read that Sheikh Hamdan approved the new Dh80 billion sewerage system for Dubai. Now that we're seeing such a step taken by the rulers, who already have provided one of the best infrastructures in the world, we should applaud and support in whatever way we can. Specially us, the #landscapearchitects, #landscapeconsultants, and #landscapecontractors, should lead the way forward with solutions that best suits the city and the scenarios with it. One thing that we need to do is categorize the implementation into micro and macro planning activities. We saw how the storm-water flooded not only the primary 6-lane roads, but also got into communities and houses individually as well. Following are a few steps out of tens and hundreds that we are highlighting below: 1. Yes, the major part of planning is to deal with proper grading and drainage, the city needs to have rain-water reservoirs at different intervals of different scales. 2. Green Infrastructure: Incorporating green spaces like parks, retention ponds, swales, and biofiltration basins that helps slow down and filter storm-water before it enters waterways or the sewage system. 3. Use of permeable surfaces for hardscaped spaces helps absorb rainwater, reducing runoff into drainage systems. 4. Upgrading and regular maintenance of drainage infrastructure, including storm drains, culverts, and channels, helps to efficiently convey storm-water away from urban areas. 5. Constructing flood barriers, and levees in wadis can protect vulnerable areas from storm surge and rising water levels during heavy rainfall events. 6. And as we saw how the roofs/walls/windows of villas, townhouses, and apartments were leaking, we should have high standards of checks for construction quality with activities such as water-proofing. As for the end user has to suffer not just the bottom-up water rise, but also the top-down punctures creating disturbance and economic loss that could have been avoided with just a proper responsibly-working-mechanism in place. One can also suggest designing for a higher return period and a higher value of intensity of rainfall though it might be uneconomical but it can accomodate the flood water when it rains like it rained today and uneconomical shouldn't be a problem for Dubai government but it can be done upto a limit because we can't make drain sizes big beyond a point. Hence the key is combining LID with well-designed drains. This way, Dubai gets a flood-proof system that's also good for the environment in the long run. Conclusion: A Multi-faceted Approach While increasing storm sewer capacity for higher return periods can be beneficial, it's not the sole answer due to cost and size limitations. Dubai has a tropical desert and a hot arid environment. However, rainfall in the city has increased in recent decades, reaching more than 130 mm (5.12 in) each year. Four months ago, the United Arab Emirates saw its highest rainfall ever. The heavy rains struck Dubai on April 15-16, with up to 10 inches of rain falling in two days. According to WWA experts, present climate conditions have increased the likelihood of such an occurrence by double.
