A couple of more weeks left to register for this The Graduate Center, City University of New York school and district leadership course with Lisa Auslander, Ph.D. to help leaders reflect and develop stronger school-wide multi-tiered systems of support for multilingual learners! Here's a quote from the book that reflects the problem the course is trying to solve: "As educators working with schools to serve their multilingual learners, practitioners often ask us for concrete actions and strategies "that work" in order to replicate them in their own settings. They want quick insights and immediate strategies in response to the increasing linguistic diversity of their schools. The quest for easy fixes and fast results gets in the way of educators engaging in a deeper analysis of the social system within their own school communities. [...] They may find idiosyncratic moments of success with one routine or fresh idea, but they cannot achieve results consistently at scale for all of their students. This perpetuates the system's failure to fully educate all multilingual learners."

Transformational leadership needs to occur to change the system of education. We are lacking in so many areas, but most concerning to me is the lack of leading kids to purpose. We get so caught up with encouraging kids to get good grades so they can get into a good school to pursue a high paying career. No wonder there is a lack of passion in the workforce. Developing a system to inspire kids to pull out the purposes of their heart requires a system that allows educators who are working in their calling to be able to have freedom to draw these things out of their students. Unfortunatley, constant stress about standardized testing is taking the art out of teaching. A quick observation of the amount of teachers leaving the proffesion should be cause for concern. Problems have solutions, we need to find one for the kids.

I read Feirsen and Weitzman's article, New Leaders, Here's How to Navigate Conflict and will address the question: How can addressing conflict lead to a shift in school culture and continuous improvement? Resolving conflict can transform school culture and drive improvement by fostering trust, active listening, and collaboration. School leaders and teachers must approach issues openly, leveraging their insights to create action plans and implement solutions. Valuing everyone's diverse perspectives contributes to fostering a positive school environment. Becoming an effective leader is a gradual process, but promoting inclusivity and encouraging voices will encourage active involvement in enhancing the school's culture. @GSUEdlead #GSUEdLead

For some reason it’s a good year for dragonflies in these parts. Since they are conceived on land, hatch in water and eventually take to the skies, dragonflies are harbingers of change. Which got me thinking: Are classrooms, schools and district leaders ready for change this coming school year? Are the adults ready to learn and grow, so their students will learn and grow? If your teachers aren’t growing, then neither will your students. What do you need to be ready? A keynote for your district on engagement, inspiration or growth? Executive coaching at district, department or school levels to improve cultural conditions for innovation? A book study for leaders to learn on their own at their own pace with their colleagues? Some or all of the above? I have and will continue to curate the conditions for change for my school clients. Education stands at a pivotal crossroads. Teachers are exhausted, and administrators are convinced that the current path is necessary. Yet, at the heart of this are the students, and the status quo is unacceptable. Collaboration is essential to enhance the prospects of future generations. My role extends beyond liaising with school districts; I conduct developmental classes for educators. Catering to distinct needs, I manage two separate websites. My approach transcends traditional presentations; we engage in dialogues, sharing common experiences. It's time to unite for the betterment of our communities. The initial step is simple: choose the website that aligns with your requirements. Together, we can foster improvement rather than division. In my book, "Emotional Intelligence For School Leaders," I emphasize the transformative role of empathic listening. As educators guiding young lives, it's not just our mission to teach – it's also to listen, genuinely and empathically.-->https://buff.ly/3x0Ka1q Empathic listening goes beyond hearing words; it's about being fully present for our students, teachers, and parents. This means focusing intently, avoiding interruptions, and truly connecting with their experiences. Why does this matter? -It validates the speaker's feelings, fostering trust and openness. -It aids in understanding the real issues, leading to better problem-solving. -It shows we care, which is healing and empowering for the school community. Let's continue to listen with our hearts as much as with our ears, and in doing so, we will not only elevate our leadership but also enrich the educational experience for all.

🗣️ Leaders, it’s time to add these books to your reading list! 1️⃣ ”Courageous Conversations About Race”, by Glenn E. Singleton.Great for practical strategies and insights to fostering authentic conversations that lead to meaningful change. 2️⃣ “Multiplication Is For White People: Raising Expectations For Other People’s Children”, by Lisa Delpit. She debunks myths and shares real-world examples of subconscious biases on race that are often found in schools. 3️⃣ “Culturally Responsive Teaching & The Brain”, by Zaretta Hammond. Hammond provides educators with tools and strategies to effectively engage diverse learners, leveraging their cultural backgrounds as assets in the learning process. These books are not only essential additions to any leader's reading list but also serve as invaluable resources for building antiracist communities and fostering equity in education. Comment below, have you read any of these? Are there any you would add to the list? #schoolleaders #edleadership #whenbrowngirlslead
