It's amazing where you find yourself when you work with such a range of clients from different sectors. Yesterday I was at a conference hosted by the British Medical Journey (BMJ) about FutureHealth in London'as Kings Place. A few things stood out. I was amazed to hear that the NHS are still buying fax machines, and that loneliness has the same impact on our life expectancy as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. How did that happen! What spoke to me was when the impressive Rajesh Aggarwal (CEO of Twenty30Health) talked about how each new health innovation should look to decommission 5 or more previous technologies in the ecosystem to ensure they gain attention and traction in a vastly overcrowded system. Wise words from a brilliant man who is tackling obesity in the US right now! What we don't need is more of the same. Ending the day was Martha Lane Fox who observed the future on three pillars; Digitisation, Diversity and Sustainability. Nothing new, when you look at it from one angle, but packed with opportunities when viewed from, for example, inside the NHS. And I loved that she doesn't want the UK to be the next Silicon Valley with its egos, financial inequality and posturing. Here here.

Implementation Science: A Tool to Decrease Health Inequities We had high expectations for the development of long-acting antiretroviral therapy (LA-ART). Now that it has arrived, we face real-world challenges for its implementation. In my opinion, this study brings important highlights: The importance of #ImplementationScience in making new technologies a reality and avoiding missed opportunities. Addressing clients' and healthcare needs is critical to decreasing access inequities. New technologies must be affordable. Those who need LA-ART (or other new technologies) are not being reached, possibly because clinical phase trials and policies are not listening to communities about how to overcome barriers to access. A client-centered approach is more than ever the basis of any successful health innovation implementation. Without considering Implementation Science as an essential tool to put new technologies into practice, innovation can exacerbate risks instead of ameliorating #health disparities.

It was great to meet with Hon Simon Bridges, Chief Executive of the Auckland Business Chamber to discuss the opportunity to grow Auckland's health technology sector. Roche is renowned for partnering with the brightest minds in science and healthcare so we can enable health systems to focus on effectively and sustainably meeting the needs of patients and to make decisions that support greater equity of access to healthcare. Insights from health data can provide us with a deeper understanding of a disease that can make earlier and more accurate diagnosis possible for patients. They can drive the development of personalised treatments informed by an understanding of patients’ preferences and the outcomes that matter most to them. At the care level, they enable evidence-based clinical decision-making to give patients the best chance of a positive outcome. Data captured through remote digital monitoring could be used to predict disease and identify signs of disease progression earlier, leading to more rapid and appropriate treatment decisions. We believe New Zealand has an opportunity to position itself as a global leader in healthcare and that Auckland's Health Technology sector can become an even better place for the industry to thrive. The Auckland Tech Council recently published a roadmap to Auckland becoming a HealthTech hub which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/gfeFzAKA

A day of clinical innovation across Queensland Health. Innovation = risk, but the opportunity cost of not innovating clinical models of care is an often “unseen” risk, especially to our consumers through delays in receiving care, negative experiences and potentially complete care avoidance. As a system, we need to consider the ecosystem of stakeholders and not just aiming to mitigating our own risk. Key takeaways: - Embed clinicians in the change and transformation - Deploy when safe and creating value, not when perfect - Build in post “go-live” resources for implementing rapid improvements
