More details emerge about that $25M deepfake heist in Hong Kong - the FT identified the company involved (Arup). I would bet that Arup has a strong technical cybersecurity program - this type of attack shows that smart threat actors are focusing their efforts on people/social engineering and using audio and video deepfakes before we have reliable technological detection solutions. Now is the time to educate employees about these types of attacks and put business processes in place to detect and block fraud of this type.

Scammed for $25m by a deepfake video call. 👨🏾💻 💰 I remember hearing about this story in January and thinking both how scary it was and what could have been done to support the company and staff involved. The reality is, no-one expects to be scammed by people who 'appear' to be their colleagues. But we can educate each other, ourselves and report unusual requests, whatever form that may come in. No-one ever got fired for trying to protect a company from fraud or scammers. Email is the most common form of cyber threat. But with so many avenues of communication, it's crucial to protect yourself and your business. Please reach out to Resolution IT if you need any help with #cybersecurity or #ITsupport.
