Aamina Sheikh’s Post

This week I organized a thought-provoking seminar with Dr. Erum, where she talked about the power of mindfulness and self-awareness. She stressed the importance of journaling – how putting our thoughts on paper can help us gain clarity and self-awareness. She encouraged living in the moment, emphasizing how most of our worries stem from the past or exist in the future, not in the present moment. Moreover, she encouraged focusing on the things we can control and letting go of the things beyond our influence. She also emphasized understanding our inner selves, separate from societal expectations. Growing up, we’re conditioned by external voices about how we should be, which makes it hard to distinguish our true aspirations from what others want us to do. Dr. Erum reminded us that success is personal – what nourishes your soul and brings fulfillment might not align with traditional measures like wealth or status. It's about identifying what makes us truly happy and fulfilled. Furthermore, she shared a powerful message that we can always pivot our path. Unlike the common belief that once a decision is made, it’s permanent, we can adapt and change course whenever necessary. One key takeaway that stuck with me was her advice on deconstructing our thoughts and goals using the “Five Whys.” By asking yourself “Why?” five times, you can uncover the true motivation behind your actions and intentions. It was an inspiring session, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to reflect on these lessons!
