Universal health coverage is essential, especially in developing countries where access to healthcare remains limited. The ISPV-Africa project in Togo is pioneering digital health insurance solutions for vulnerable populations, combining online payment options, home visits, and integrated care to improve healthcare access. Findings from the pilot phase emphasize the importance of trust-building through personalized services and targeted communication significantly in improving uptake and renewals. Offering varied care packages based on needs and addressing past negative experiences are also critical in ensuring continued usage of the insurance services. 🌍💬 Join the conversation on Universal Health Coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa! Cheryl Cashin and Jean-Paul Dossou offer insightful perspectives on the role of publicly funded contributory health insurance in achieving UHC goals. While NHI has gained traction, their research reveals that none of the countries that have implemented NHI have performed better on key UHC indicators than higher performing countries of Africa that did not introduce NHI. Still, there are three examples (Gabon, Ghana, and Rwanda) of countries that have made progress toward UHC through NHI. Discover key insights from their experiences! South Africa's National Health Insurance (NHI) promises universal healthcare, but the reality could be a nightmare. Patients entering the system healthy could find themselves deteriorating due to: 🔴 Long waiting times: With more patients and fewer resources, expect endless queues and delays. 🔴 Subpar quality of care: Overburdened staff and inadequate facilities will compromise the quality of healthcare. 🔴 Limited access to specialists: Bureaucratic red tape will make it harder to see the specialists you need. 🔴 Increased health risks: Longer waits and reduced care quality mean minor issues could escalate into serious health problems. Let's not turn our health into a gamble. Help us fight the NHI: https://lnkd.in/du3Em_YU

Nationwide social protection programmes in sub-Saharan African countries are helping governments to address inequalities and financial barriers to quality healthcare. 👨🏿⚕️ In Senegal, a five-person team managing two health insurance units covered over 400,000 informal workers and the rural poor. Social health insurance covers 85-95% of costs. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, access to quality health care increased by an average of 60%. ↗️ As patients pay less, they are more likely to use the services. It is both easy and lazy to apportion blames when things go wrong but there's a better and higher way: system-based approach. l first learned of this some years ago while doing a course with University of Roehampton Online and it really impacted my thinking. If long-term longlasting solutions to the problems of healthcare in Nigeria will be realised, we would need to share the responsibility, and help each other. We would need to eschew simple solutions and embrace holistic thinking. This is because many times there are several layers to a problem with some things acting as enablers to what is wrong, so they all ought to be addressed. For instance, the issue of power/energy in Nigeria and its impact on healthcare; or that of the low uptake of health insurance; or why good initiatives always seem to fall flat on their faces when they get to the field 🤔 . Let's apply the systems-based approach to improve the quality of healthcare we offer and be sure this is sustained into the future. It may not be easy but it is surely worth it. #healthsystemsgovernance #healthpolicy #healthadvocacy #healthinsurance #globalsurgery #betterhealthcare #systemsstrengthening

Ethiopia and Abt Global continue to demonstrate the potential for local solutions to complex problems. While community-based health insurance isn't a panacea for all countries, Ethiopia has demonstrated how CBHI has played a critical role in the overall health financing reform journey that Ethiopia is on to achieve #universalhealthcoverage based on a foundation of #phc #uhc #primaryhealthcare
Streamlining CBHI: The USAID Health Financing Improvement Program led by Abt Global, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Health Insurance Service, recently completed an extensive study. The objective was to analyze the distribution of revenue within the Community-Based Health Insurance system across various #tiersinthehealthsystem. Key Findings: 65% of CBHI revenue is dedicated to #primarycare services, ensuring that essential care reaches grassroots level. The remaining 35% is allocated to secondary and tertiary care services, supporting specialized medical interventions. Reserves have been set aside to address any financial deficits that may arise. In the event of unexpected shortfalls, the respective governments are anticipated to step in and bailout the CBHI schemes. #AbtGlobal #Healthfinancing #EthiopianHealthInsuranceService #CBHI
