While working on-site recently, I came across a liquid ring pump and wondered: “Why is it called a pump when it’s clearly compressing gas?” So, I did some research, and here’s a brief summary of what I found: How It Works: A liquid ring pump uses a rotating impeller and a sealing liquid (usually water) to create a vacuum or compress gas. The impeller’s motion throws the liquid outward, forming a ring that creates variable-volume chambers to either suck in or compress gas. Why It’s Called a Pump: Its primary role is to create a vacuum by lowering pressure, which is why it’s classified as a pump. When used to increase gas pressure, it acts like a compressor, but its core function remains vacuum creation. Key Advantages: Handles Wet & Dirty Gases: Unlike standard compressors, it can process vapor-laden or contaminated gases without damage. Oil-Free Operation: Great for clean, sensitive processes like in the pharma or food industries. Self-Cooling: The liquid absorbs heat, preventing overheating. Governed by API 681, liquid ring pumps are widely used in oil & gas, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries for their reliability and versatility in tough environments.
