Success shouldn't come at the expense of family. I left the military to ensure I could be there for my kids as they grew up. Providing financially is important, but being present is invaluable. Is your success worth the cost?

It's important to recognize that success means different things to different people. Comparing your achievements to someone else's can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. So, never measure your success with someone else's ruler, and stay true to yourself and your own aspirations.

“With this Shield or upon it”-Spartan Mothers as their sons left for battle. One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn in business is how to choose my teammates/partners with intense consideration. When embarking on a start up journey it’s like going to war. You create a plan. You prepare for extreme hardship. You go to war with your team. As with a Spartan shield formation, each person must pull their own weight to support the whole. One team member falters and chooses self over the goal and the vision falls apart. Every memeber must pull their weight. Every partner must support the others. Otherwise…. Defeat. Slowly or quickly, defeat in inevitable. One strong warrior can’t sustain the entire shield wall. One partner can’t carry the rest. Choose your teammates wisely. Know your own position. Execute. Execute. Execute your piece of the plan. Bring your shield home(your own hard work) or be upon it (nothing left to give. You did your utmost). Entrepreneurialship…not for the faint of heart.

You have to NEED your success more than you WANT your success. When you WANT something you will wait for it. You will wait for the right time. You will wait for the right opportunity. When you NEED something you will go and get it. When something is a NEED you will make time or even create time for it. When you NEED the right opportunity you will go look for it or create an opportunity for yourself. When your in NEED of something you will do whatever is required to attain it. You have to NEED your success and your greatness more than you WANT it. When what you WANT becomes what you NEED you will begin to make and see progress. John Maxwell recently came to my church and talked to us about the difference between success and significance… It made a real impression on me. How we define success is key to leaving a meaningful life. But I think it’s very easy to adopt other people’s definitions of “success” and let this shape what we deem to be significant… Such as money, growth, scaling, generosity, hobbies, you name it. This is why it’s worth spending serious time on what WE believe is significant (i.e. what truly matters). And then we need to make sure our definition of success is tied to real significance.
