My days finally make sense In my previous professional life, 20 years in IT, one of the things that gave me a huge sense of fulfilment was helping my customers, my colleagues and the people I managed. Having the ability to assist those people to develop and achieve their goals gave me great satisfaction. With bike fitting, I can take that level of satisfaction and fulfilment and times it by 1000; concentrating on the individual and using my experience and knowledge to tailor the fit to their needs makes every day a good one What is a bike fit; simply, it’s a way of biomechanically assessing a rider and adjusting the bike to fit them, so they can get the most out of their riding time, whatever their goals. Limits are often illusions waiting to be shattered! 🚴♂️ **From Recovery to Record: Celebrating Personal Milestones in Cycling** 🌟 From my early days on a heavy Cannondale hybrid in Cleveland to today's more modern Trek road bike rides, my cycling journey has been about breaking limits—both on the road and in life. This morning marked a special milestone: for the last 111 days, rain or shine, I've ridden at least 30 miles each day. Just two weeks ago, I completed a 100-mile ride, and today, I hit a new average speed of 16.3 mph over 30 miles. This achievement shatters my previous self-imposed limits and serves as a testament to the resilience and strength I've built since a life-altering cycling accident. My recovery taught me more than just how to get back on the bike; it showed me how to push through perceived barriers. Initially, I thought 20 miles was my max distance and 12-13 mph was my speed cap for longer rides. But today, I've proved myself wrong—anything you set your mind to is achievable. This morning, my mentors, Thomas Moorehead and John Jacob, reminded me of this lesson. Thomas, recognizing my hard work ethic, reassured me that once I commit to a task, it's as good as done. John emphasized that real achievements require hard work; if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. In the spirit of President Joe Biden's often-quoted encouragement, "We have to remember who we are and [that there's] nothing we can't do," I’m inspired to continue pushing the boundaries of what I can achieve, both on and off the bike. Here are some snapshots: one from my early cycling days in Ohio with my first bike and one from today’s ride showing the stats that mark my new record. Work pressure was leading to sleepless nights.The negativity was slowly seeping into my personal space. So, I decided to go on an impromptu cycle ride. The outcome from the ride were; 1. I love riding cycles. 2. I have am bitten by the cycle touring bug. So more rides to come. 3. I don’t need a cycling gear to enjoy the ride. 4. Have you ever felt so stupid … that you laugh at yourself? I moved to Basel a couple years ago. The biggest difference to my life is cycling everywhere. I have never cycled so much in my life. But there’s one problem with cycling everywhere. → Your bicycle runs down quicker. Until 2023, I’d always bring my bicycle to the shop to get it fixed. But I decided enough was enough. I’ve been in Basel for 5 years and I don’t know how to fix basic bicycle problems, like: - changing tire - changing brakes - changing pedals I decided to give it a try. Boy, was I in for a ride. Whenever somebody changes my brakes, it takes 5 minutes. This time — when I changed them — it took 1 hour. I watched a ton of Youtube videos. And I finally cracked it. You can’t imagine the feeling of pride and accomplishment. There’s 3 conclusions I take from changing my own bicycle brakes: 1. An expert can boost the speed to reach your goals 2. Doing it myself takes longer but I learn some lessons 3. The best way is to have an expert fix it with you — you know what to do and get personalised advice for your bicycle

After Day 3 I'm now in Ludlow. I can't believe we're a third of the way through and have cycled half of England! Day 2 was tough at around 112 miles with the steep hills of Cothelstone and Cheddar. Day 3 was a relatively easy day in terms of mileage (95) and elevation which, in theory, may give our legs a chance to recover - at least a little. That's if you do not believe a Garmin watch which suggests 4 days recovery (no cycling!). My legs are certainly sore after 3 days of cycling. The distance to John O Groats still feels so incredibly far away. Each of these daily rides are a huge challenge individually for me. Breaking each ride down in to steps makes them feel easier to achieve. Each day has 2 pitstops so we're really doing 3 x (circa) 35 mile rides. Each 35 mile ride can be further broken down in to chunks of 5 miles and smaller steps of 1 mile and each mile completed makes me realise I'm achieving and heading in the right direction. Whatever the goal is breaking it down in to bite sized chunks makes it feel a whole lot easier to achieve. What's a huge challenge for you? When you break it down it might not seem so bad.
