- When you're ready to start creating your own documents there are a number of options here in Word 2016 to help you get started. That's what we're going to do right now. So it doesn't matter what's on your screen, we're going to go up to the File tab to access backstage view and select New. Now we've seen this before where we can create a new Blank document. Believe it or not that uses a template. A template that has nothing on it, but does set up things like your margins, your paper size, and so on. So by default you'd be working with an eight and a half by 11 sheet of paper with one inch margins. Let's give it a click just to check it out. So with the ruler visible, and if yours isn't just go up to the View tab and make sure Ruler is checked off, you're going to see margins here of an inch on the left and the right, on an eight an a half inch wide piece of paper. That means at six and a half inches here, you can see seven and a half is the edge. So we have one inch margins on the…
